From Geordie to Scouse and Estuary English, Britain has a rich dialect tradition, and in 2005, for the first time in some fifty years, a major nationwide survey is being conducted to see how we talk, what words we use, and how accents and vocabulary vary from region to region. Radio 4, in conjunction with BBC local radio stations, will be out and about interviewing people all over the country from all walks of, and their survey will culminate in August with a major 6-part Radio 4 series. About the Author
Simon Elmes is deputy editor of the BBC's Radio Documentaries Unit, where he works on a wide range of programmes including the long-running magazine 'Word of Mouth', which he founded and which was awarded one of the world's premier broadcasting prizes, the Premio Ondas, in 1996. He produced 'The Routes of English', a 25-part series on the history of the English language and has written four books to accompany the series.
