5.0 out of 5 stars A solid, well written book.
This book gave sound examples and concepts regarding the process of grieving. This book has helped me discuss and answer questions about death, to my 4yo daughter. With this books guidance, I know that dealing with the loss of her grandparents will be easier on both of us. If for no other reason than the level of understanding the grieving processes. 3.0 out of 5 stars Grief in Children
I read this book years ago and I have given it to several people who have experienced a death in a family with young children (better than a casserole or flowers.) It is very strong on the issue of how children through adolescence grieve. I had never heard the concept of regrieving but I experienced it when my father died 30+ years after my mother. My grandchildren...

Additionally, I have been able to use the concepts to help my child deal with a close family friend's distant move. A great "reference" book to have around.

5.0 out of 5 stars Required Reading For Every Adult, July 29, 2003
By

This review is from: Talking With Children About Loss (Paperback)
This book was a Godsend to me! My sister died suddenly in her sleep of a brain aneurysm, 9 days after giving birth to her second child. The oldest child, not quite 3 years old at the time, was the first to try to wake her that morning. How do you help a little child understand death and loss - what do you say? What should you not say? I needed specific answers and detailed explanations to guide my nephew through this horrible time for all of us. The author not only verified my instinct to be honest with my nephew, but also encouraged me to become a grief-model for him. She also explains how a child will "regrieve" a loss, such as the death of a parent, many times throughout their lives, and shows how crucial it is that a child learn to deal with and work through grief. Other losses that children experience, such as divorce, are also dealt with in a very comprehensive manner. Loss is a fact of life, and Ms. Trozzi and Ms. Massimini offer invaluable lessons to help you teach your child to deal with these inevitable losses. I keep several copies of this book on hand, because I give it to almost everyone I know. Don't wait till you need this book - read it now!!! I honestly think my nephew is dealing with his loss in a good way, and we've both learned to help each other. To the authors, I am forever in your debt.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Insight!, June 24, 2001

This review is from: Talking With Children About Loss (Paperback)
Thank you both - Maria and Kathy - for the wisdom, insight and well-defined exposures of difficult times during a loss of any kind. Whether it's a fierce injury or the untimely grief from loosing someone, children must hike through unexpected tragic events and your healthy outlook embraces this process. This informative book leads parents, or anyone, toward bonding with children who may be silently suffering. These talented authors present certain steps - vividly and realistically - by restoring and achieving a nourishment of harmony after any adversity. During my years of researching head injuries, I have uncovered the fact that the second leading group subjected to head injuries are children. There is very little research or reading material concerning this trauma so I am thrilled to locate this enormous wealth of help for them. I thoroughly recommend this book to any family struggling with grief or any painful experience. You two ladies have surfaced significantly - comfort and advice - by vocalizing the needs of children; feelings deep inside them which may have been overlooked. Thank you for sharing your research while you continue to make a difference in this world.

"Talking with Children about Loss" is the first book I would recommend to anyone who cares about grieving children. It is well-written, easy to understand, and easy to learn from and implement. Wish I'd found this book long ago.

This book is a must read for anyone working with families that have children who have experienced grief. It is well written and easy to read. Because of the depth of the material and its impact, I would recommend going a little slow, chapter by chapter and allowing what is written to sink in a little over time. This is a very useful and powerful book. I plan to apply its concepts in my own grief ministry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not only specific to loss due to death!, December 4, 2009

I love, love, love this book. It deals with loss due to death, but also other types of loss (divorce, moving away, etc.) It has been a great benefit to me. I feel so much more able to help my son in all the losses that he has had (loss of me while I was caring for his critically ill twin brother, death of his twin, divorce, etc.) It has allowed me to see more clearly what he is feeling and given me many ideas on ways to help him. I would recommend this book to ALL parents.

Maria Tozzi did a wonderful job with this book. Her knowledge and experience was very evident. Her examples were explicit. She made learning about children and the grief response easy to understand.

I have given this book to friends, neighbors and professionals because Maria Trozzi does such a great job of looking at loss from the standpoint of child development. She is a brilliant speaker if you ever have the chance to hear a presentation given by her. School Districts would benefit from having her speak to ALL staff at an Inservice Workshop. Every adult who comes in contact with children/teens should have this resource to help them support young people during the inevitable loss experiences they will endure.

I read this book years ago and I have given it to several people who have experienced a death in a family with young children (better than a casserole or flowers.) It is very strong on the issue of how children through adolescence grieve. I had never heard the concept of regrieving but I experienced it when my father died 30+ years after my mother. My grandchildren have recently experienced the death of a family friend and I have sent this to their parents and reread it myself. I think the section on loss though divorce is not as strong but it is valuable to emphasize that family rearrangements involve loss.
