About the Author

Faith Ringgold was born in Harlem, but now divides her time between New Jersey and La Jolla, California.  She is a professor of fine art at the University of California at San Diego, where she teaches for half of the year.

An artist of international renown, Faith is best known for her story quilts -- works that combine painting, quilted fabric, and storytelling.

Faiths first book for children, Tar Beach, was a Caldecott Honor Book, a winner of the Coretta Scott King Award for illustration, a Reading Rainbow featured selection, a New York Times Best Illustrated Book, and the recipient of numerous other honors, including a Parents Choice Gold Award.

Faith is married to Burdette Ringgold and has two daughters, Michele and Barbara, and three granddaughters, Faith, Teddy and Martha.

More About the Author

Faith Ringgold was born in Harlem in 1930. She received a degree in art education from the City College of New York and was an art teacher long before she became a professional artist. She is best known for her 'painted story quilts,' some of which hang in the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City. Tar Beach, RinggoldÕs first book for children, won the Coretta Scott King Award for illustration and was named a Caldecott Honor Book. Ringgold is now a professor of art at the University of California at San Diego. She lives in California and in New Jersey.

I found this at a booksale for 99 cents! (Sorry Amazon!) Faith Ringgold is about even more than Tar Beach. I found it a real inspiration for my niece, who is also artistically inclined. She remarked on the wide array of media Ms. Ringgold works with, and the 'journey' that brought her to children's books. I guess I should have suggested that SHE write this review...
