Editorial Reviews

Review

The lush photography book turns Rolston's camera lens on a collection of dummies unearthed at the Vent Haven Museum in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky. Matthew Rolston, who typically photographs celebrities and music stars like: Jessica Simpson, Zac Efron, Jay-Z, Mary J. Blige, Adam Levine, Oprah, Kelly Osbourne and Michael Jackson, employed a formal portrait approach to capturing the dolls characterizations in more than 100 images over 224 pages. (Design Life Network, October 30, 2013)

About the Author

Well known for his influential lighting techniques and unique approach to art direction and design, photographer and director Matthew Rolston has been strongly identified throughout his career with the revival and modern expression of Hollywood glamour. Rolston was discovered by Andy Warhol for Warhol's groundbreaking Interview Magazine, where he began a successful career in photography. Soon after he began shooting covers and unique editorial assignments for founding editor Jann Wenner of Rolling Stone. Shortly, other prominent publications began to recognize Rolston's work, such as Harper's Bazaar, Vogue, Vanity Fair, W, GQ, Esquire, O, the Oprah Magazine and The New York Times Magazine. Deciding to extend his vision beyond still photography into the moving image, Rolston began conceiving, writing and directing music videos and television commercials for such diverse clients as Madonna, Janet Jackson, Christina Aguilera, Beyoncé Knowles, L'Oreal, Revlon, Esteé Lauder, Clairol, Pantene, Elizabeth Arden, Gap, and Polo Ralph Lauren, among many others. Once again redefining and expanding the scope of his vision, Rolston has now begun to move into the areas of fine arts, experiential design (including hospitality), product design, and new media ventures.

It's a wonderfull book and I like it. But we haven't the names of the dummies and it's a real shame.

There is something eerily compelling about these actual sized color photos of vintage ventriloquist figures. Not much text--only a forward, really, but still, there is something about it that draws you to it and keeps you coming back to stare at the images and notice subtle things about each figure.

My only complaint was in the printing of the copy I purchased--there was an ink smudge or off-registration that marred a small number of the pictures. But that aside, I found it to be a great book.

This is an amazing volume, a riveting, completely transformative experience to engage with. There is little text, but the brilliance of the photography invests the heads of these ventriloquist's dummies with silently charged story of a kind that you cannot tell in words, only in art. Talking Heads is one of the most extraordinary works of the visual imagination to be published in a good long while.

There are no art books or photography books that compare to this book of portraits. I would say that all of these dummies have souls after looking into their eyes. The editorial in the book is very thoughtful and informative too. A really great book for gift giving, original and beautiful.
