Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Pray your way to a deeper relationship with God.

For Jesus, prayer was as necessary as breathing. If the Son of God felt such a great need for contact with the Father, how much more do we!
But why do we need to pray? God, who knows everything, knows our needs. Why do we need to tell Him what He already knows? This is one of the most basic misunderstandings about prayer. We think the purpose of prayer is to give information to God: “Lord, I need this and I need that”—when in reality the purpose of prayer is to conform us to His will.
Prayer doesn’t change God. Prayer changes us. It changes our attitude from complaint to praise. It enables us to participate in God’s eternal plan. It makes us aware of our total inadequacy—and God’s infinite sufficiency.
Join beloved Bible teacher Ray Stedman as he leads you through the prayer life of our Savior and shows how Jesus taught us what it means to have direct, personal fellowship with God and how to move deeper into fellowship with Him through prayer.
Pray your way to a deeper relationship with God.

What a great, easy read! Stedman speaks plainly on prayer, and it's vital role in the life of believers. In the first part of the book, he provides a solid foundation for why we should pray based on a clear understanding of the character of God: "We must either pray and not quit, move closer to God or 'faint'." (p. 11). He builds on this foundation through the rest of the book with practical applications, and illustrations that are sure to usher a believer from feeling hopeless to feeling encouraged to start communicating with God on a more regular basis. He addresses issues such as prayer and the number of people praying, "bindind and loosing", and the role of the Holy Spirit in our prayers. He shows us that "...we need a new kind of prayer, not just more of the same kind." (p. 23) He also uses passages in Luke and John to bring a richer understanding of how beautifully intimate prayer really is, and what Jesus prays for us. I can not recommend this book enough. It truly is one of the hidden treasures amongst published Christian writings.

I love Ray Stedman's sound and inspiring books. This one on prayer is a treasure. It truly will change the way you pray. I was concerned with the "wish list" kind of prayer going on in many churches and home - partly because we misinterpret Jesus' instructions on prayer. Take notes, underline, reread..... This book can be a life-changer for the layman.

Probably one of the best books on The Lord's Prayer I have ever read (and I've read at least three). Ray has a way with words, he's easy to understand yet able to get to the depths of the matter without losing you in the crossfire. If you yearn for a fresh outlook on prayer and its benefits this is a great read.
