Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Jimmy Carter continues his call to peace with the newly revised edition of his widely acclaimed Talking Peace: A Vision for the Next Generation, originally published in 1993. In addition to updating previous discussions, the former President has written new sections about conflicts in Bosnia, Haiti, Korea and Sudan (Dutton, $18.99 ISBN 0-525-45517-5; Puffin, $5.99 paper ISBN 0-14-037440-X Nov.).

From School Library Journal

Grade 7-12-Like other former presidents, Jimmy Carter tends to justify himself in his memoirs; unlike them, his actual post-presidential conduct supports his justifications. The author of several books for adults, Carter here addresses teenagers as future world citizens, advocating free and fair elections and the art of negotiation as alternatives to civil and international war. Illustrating his points with his own experiences, both as president and later as founder of the Carter Center, he also shows how food, shelter, and health care are the foundations of peace, and how poverty leads to environmental degradation and personal desperation. Most interesting is his discussion of how the International Negotiation Network Council, an organization he founded, mediates between warring factions in civil wars when intergovernmental organizations such as the United Nations cannot. Well organized and written in clear, lively, free-flowing style, this account does not oversimplify the complex problems it addresses, and will hold the interest of readers concerned about them. Other books on Carter for this age group stop at the end of his presidency; few books on peace deal with underlying causes with as much depth.

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy Reading, Infromative Book, March 1, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Talking Peace: A Vision for the Next Generation: Revised Edition (Paperback)
Talking Peace: A Vision for the Next Generation is an easy reading, informative book. Jimmy Carter is able to present his ideas and many facts in a concise and understandable way. My knowledge of world events and the workings of the Carter Center in Atlanta, Georgia, was greatly enhanced by this book. I now know that the Carter Center is one of the world's leading mediator's between warring countries. If you have a desire to increase your knowledge of the actions nations, especially the United States, are taking to preserve the peace and biodiversity of the planet, and you want to understand some of the conflicts and struggles other countries are undergoing then read this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Informative yet enjoyable, February 28, 2000

This review is from: Talking Peace: A Vision for the Next Generation: Revised Edition (Paperback)
Jimmy Carter's Talking Peace is an exceptionally informative yet quite enjoyable book. The ex-Presidents views and insights into the world as we know it offer a glimpse of true love and compassion for all humanity. The numerous programs that are undertaken by the Carter Foundation provide many underprivileged individuals and families with a reality which is a little friendlier. Habitat for Humanity, for instance, is a great undertaking which provides homeless or poverty stricken people with a place to stay at little or no cost. President Carter is an extremely knowledgeable man whose knowledge equals, if not surpasses, many of the world's recognizable brilliant minds. The experiences he has gathered throughout his life, including both his upbringing and his presidency, allow him to discuss the implications of numerous things, many of which ordinary people do not consider. Overall Talking Peace is a great book and I would recommend it to anyone who would like to better themselves by reading it.
