Ramana Maharshi, originally made known to the West by Dr Paul Brunton's book "A Search in Secret India", is the best known contemporary exponent of Shankara's "Philosophy" of non-dualism. This book is the finest record available of his talks with devotees, disciples and seekers from all over the world, recorded in diaries by Dr. T.M.P. Mahadevan over a four year period, from 1935 to 1939, at the foot of Mt Arunachala, Tamil Nadu, India, where Ramanasramam, his Ashram, still stands today. " You are the Self" he tells us, "Nothing but the Self. Anything else is imagination, so BE the Self here and now. There is no need to run off to a forest or shut oneself in a room; carry on with your essential activities but free yourself from association with the doer of them. Self is the Witness, you are That". Reading this book drives the reader inward towards the source; that place whence all thoughts and the original "I" thought arises. He called his method Atma Vichara - Self Enquiry - seeking the source of the ego and allowing the all-blissful Self to shine where it always has, in the Heart as I AM-I AM. If you still want a further book after reading this, the only volume worthy of mention is "I AM THAT", by Nisargadatta Maharaj, Tr. Maurice Frydman.

This book is organized in the form of questions and answers. The questions are asked by the seekers of truth and answers are given by the Supreme Sage. The book draws you into His Divine Presence. The questions are very typical of what a sincere seeker might ask. The answers are pertinent to the questions. They are precise, exact and perfect. None but the Sage could give them.

Maharshi Ramana says: Becoming, counting, gauging, enjoying, seeking etc are for the mind. The mind is nothing but a bundle of thoughts. It is trouble. Give up thoughts, ego or personality. Instead seek and BE the Real Identity. Establish firmly as the SELF. The SELF is Pure Conciousness, God, Guru and All. Self is the Teacher, the Taught and the Teaching. There is nothing to Teach but Just Being. SELF is perfection and total freedom. Self is Total Peace and Complete Happiness. "Be the Self." Surrender and just "BE in this Natural State". This Natural State is Complete Silence. It is Eternal and Ever Lasting. There is no need for endless reading, scholarship, religion, ritual and myriad forms of debates. Read "Spiritual Teachings of Ramana Maharshi" along with this book. All will be Clear. "I AM" is Ultimate Clarity. "I am THAT I AM" Establishes All.
