From the Inside Flap
Is Jonathan a dream guy . . . or a monster?
When Jonathan Cain moves to Sweet Valley, Jessica Wakefield feels an attraction so strong it's almost supernatural. Jonathan is interesting, intelligent, and gorgeous in a dark, brooding sort of way--no wonder SVH students are following him around! But Jonathan won't even meet Jessica's eyes. Will Jessica find a way to capture this mystery man's heart . . . or has she lost her touch?
Elizabeth Wakefield doesn't trust Jonathan for a single minute. She can't believe her friends--and her twin sister--are so taken with such an arrogant guy. And when a body, drained of blood, is discovered behind the Dairi Burger, Elizabeth's mistrust explodes into a fear. Jonathan might be far more dangerous than she ever imagined.

Jessica ducked into the Girls' Room before the start of last period. Brushing her hair in front of the mirror, she considered her next move. Maybe I should go out there and chain Jonathan's Harley to the Jeep, she thought, and let the air out of our tires. It would certainly prevent him from rushing off without speaking to her.For a moment she wondered if she might find a metal chain in the industrial arts department. Then she burst out laughing, imagining herself pulling such a bizarre trick. Maybe when she and Jonathan finally got together, she'd tell him how close she'd come to criminal vandalism. When the bell rang a few seconds later, she still hadn't come up with anything halfway decent. Frustrated, she tossed her hairbrush into her backpack. "I may as well take the afternoon off and go to class," she grumbled under her breath. She slipped into her French Class and grabbed a seat just as the second bell rang. As she pulled her book out of her bag, she glanced at the student in the seat beside her.Jessica's heart skipped a beat and text book dropped to the floor. She was sitting right next to Jonathan Cain.Yes! she mentally cheered as she bent over to pick up her book. If this isn't destiny, I don't know what is.Ms. Dalton began the class as she always did. "Bon jour, mes amis," she said, wishing a good day to her "friends" in a voice that was bubbling with enthusiasm. She was fairly pretty for a teacher, with straight dark hair and hazel eyes.Jessica wondered if Jonathan found Ms. Dalton attractive, but quickly dismissed the pesky idea. Jonathan is my destiny, she thought confidently. As Ms. Dalton began a review of French irregular verbs, Jessica glanced at Jonathan. He was staring straight ahead, not really looking at anyone. She wasn't food. He's aware of me, as much as I am of him, she thought.Ms. Dalton conjugated some new verbs on the chalkboard and everyone took out their notebooks. Jessica pulled out hers, too. But instead of taking down French notes, she wrote, "So tell me, Jonathan Cain, do you always ignore damsels in distress--or were you just feeling rude yesterday?"Grinning mischievously, she ripped the page out and folded it in half. When Ms. Dalton's back was turned, she tossed it onto Jonathan's desk.At first, he ignored the note. Jessica tapped her fingernails on her book, waiting. Finally, he picked it up and unfolded it. Jessica's heart beat rapidly as she watched him reading. Then he quickly wrote something in the space below her message and returned the note to her desk.Jessica's trembled as she read his response. "You don't want to mess with me," it said. "I eat little girls like you for breakfast."A sharp thrill shot up and down Jessica's spine. Thoroughly intrigued, she licked her lips and flashed him a sexy smile. He kept his eyes forward, but Jessica wasn't the least bit discouraged. She loved a challenge. You can try to ignore me all you want, but I know you feel the electric connection between us, she thought.Everything about him was gorgeous. Ignoring the French lesson, Jessica spent the class studying her destiny. He was wearing a tight black T-shirt that showed off the smooth lines of his muscular arms. His right hand was resting on the open page of his French book. Jessica imagined his long, graceful fingers entwined with hers...Her gaze fell on the ornate ring he wore on his middle finger. It appeared to be carved from wood, inlaid with silver and onyx. Someday he'll take that ring off and give it to me, she vowed.
