Grade 5-7-- Fifth-grader Joey has some problems. His mother wants him to be perfect so that her new husband will like them and stay, his teacher is threatening to meet with his mother if his grades and behavior don't improve, and he is being disruptive in class in a desperate attempt to prevent his classmates from learning his secret: he cannot read. However, his friend Harry knows and tricks him into joining a secret "club"--an after-school literacy class. Gradually, without really realizing it, Joey does learn to read and also learns that most people love you for who you are, not what you can do. Rabe's style is stilted. Readers are kept at a distance and never allowed to really get to know Joey, which makes it difficult to sustain an interest in the events. --Nancy P.
