5.0 out of 5 stars From a former USCGA Cadet who is in the video, May 9, 2008
This review is from: Tall Ship:High Sea Adventure [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Anyone who is interested in the history of the US Coast Guard Academy, Tall Ships, or sailing in general should watch this video. I got it just because I'm in it. Seriously, this video gives a very accurate account of what it was like to live on a ship back in the early days of sea exploration. A must see for every sailor.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Adventure!, November 19, 2006
This review is from: Tall Ship:High Sea Adventure [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This video reminds me why I became an oceanographer. The feeling of being at sea, away from sight of land, catching the salt spray on your face, can be exhilirating and scary at the same time. The teens in this film are transformed from young, uncertain, greenhands to seasoned, well-polished sailors over the course of 50 adventuresome minutes. There are some truly hilarious moments belowdecks and some incredibly harrowing moments on the mast. It really gives a sense of what ocean travel was like in the days of tall ships. I show this video to my college classes to give them an idea of what it's like to be at sea and what it's like to work hard to achieve a goal. I've seen it dozens of times and never tire of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Teens train aboard square rigger and grow up on the high sea, November 6, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Tall Ship:High Sea Adventure [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This ABC World of Discovery video charts the progress of a group of Danish youth who sign aboard the merchant marine ship the Danmark, an old fashioned square-rigger sailing ship, as they learn how to be sailors on a rough crossing of the stormy North Atlantic Ocean. The video is interesting for adults, yet it is the video my 6-year old son most often seeks out at the public library. Tall Ship: High Sea Adventure is just that: it provides adventure, kids (albeit older teens) with whom our son can empathize, shows how they face challenges from seasickness to homesickness to stern ships' mates, and go from green recruits to able deckhands. As many times as we have watched it as a It provides the romance of sailing the high seas the old fashioned way, tempered with the sometimes difficult realities of life. it is still interesting--so interesting that after 18 months of checking it out periodically from the library we will buy it as a Christmas gift for our sons.
