Book Description

Knowledge made flesh is freedom oppressed.

Among all the sorcerers and immortals of Andresium, only Tallis has knowledge of the forbidden words in the True Tongue for life and death. Those who fancy power find the temptation to gain - and use - such knowledge consuming, but none so much as Tallis herself. Known by most as the Loren, destined by prophecy to bring death to the very immortals who seek her enthronement, she struggles with the sway of destiny and the conflicting desires of her own heart to find a path that is both just and true.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing! May 30, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I have to say when I first started reading this book I thought it would be an easy read because it is shorter novella, but the language the author used in this book surprised me, it was still an easy read because the story is amazing; but the language it is kind of an `archaic' language. For me, stuff like this or like old Shakespeare language is harder for me to read. Not that I'm stupid or anything, lol I just happen to read over words fast, even though I'm a slower reader so these types of languages make me read even slower. I always want to make sure that I am understanding everything.

I thought at first that I wasn't going to like this book because of the different language, but I was quickly proven wrong. The beginning for me was a bit slow, that was only because of the different writing style, but the story itself is very emotional and you seem to get attached to Tallis and want to see her not fall victim for the prophecy.

I really enjoyed the love both Tallis and Tarameen had for each other, but that they were both scared to share that love because the both though themselves unworthy of the other. You just know when that happens, a great love will form with the two people, and it did. You could really feel the love between these two and how much admiration they had for each other.

The ending of this book was amazing. Clearly, there should be if there isn't a second book, but I just love the decision Tallis decided to make, it was the right decision for her and for Tarameen. This book won me over very quickly, you should definitely check it out!! Amazing story!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Treat! June 20, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
McRae's descriptions are more than worth the price of admission. This kind of story is a pure delight. For a novella, you get quickly and hopelessly addicted to every page. Tallis, "The Loren", is a heroine you will totally root for. Treat yourself to this story, you deserve it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sleek Fantasy May 30, 2012
By Carol
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Tallis is a fantasy story that grabs hold in the beginning and doesn't let go. Let me say, although I read a lot of high fantasy in my youth, it's been a while. I wasn't sure what reaction to expect. Tallis has everything, magic, romance, political intrigue, unexpected twists and turns, all wrapped up in a compact read with a polished and descriptive writing style.

The author does an excellent job of placing the reader right at the center of the action, allowing them to experience every one of the characters complex emotions, without giving away any of the exciting revelations too early. The is a surprising amount of world building and three dimensional characters for a short piece of writing, although it doesn't overload the book.

A great read. I recommend it for older teens and adults of either gender.

4.0 out of 5 stars Can't wait for the next book! May 28, 2012

While reading Tallis, I was immediately captivated by M.C. Rae's style of writing. It is simply impressive! I found myself pausing every couple of paragraphs to absorb what I had just read, since the fantasy world created is full of exceptional detail. From the descriptions of the setting to the intricate storyline, I am in awe at what is included in this novella.

Tallis is "The Loren" and immortal. There is a prophecy involving herself that she'd rather not see fulfilled. She shows no emotion, but her love, Tarameen, might just draw the feelings out of her:

"At this point in my existence, to allow myself to feel...What is the point in that? My fate is not my own. My destiny is not to seek out the longings of my own heart. I am the Loren. How can I allow myself to love?"--Tallis, M.C. Rae

Now, I didn't know Tallis is the first in a series while I was reading it. I reached the end, and I wanted more. That couldn't be the end!!! I was so ecstatic to learn there will be other books! Read Tallis and delve into an intriguing fantasy world! *Complimentary copy gifted for honest review.

2.0 out of 5 stars This book was okay...not great. The story is there. June 27, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Did I enjoy this book: This book was okay...not great, not that good...just okay, in my opinion.

The story is definitely there. It was interesting but I always felt like I was missing something. The book just jumped right in with no backstory or explanation or anything. I felt lost from the start. It almost felt like a second book in a series or like a very rough draft where you get the story out but have to go back and fill in the blanks.

The book was also very detailed. It had a lot of description and metaphors...beautifully written, but more than I needed in such a short story. I wanted to really like Tallis but I didn't know enough about her in the beginning to actually care about her throughout the story. And Tarameen really loved Tallis and I wanted to root for them. But his backstory was also confusing. I didn't understand his schooling and place in the hierarchy of the school.

All-in-all, this book was okay...not great. The story is there...I just wish there was more of it.

Would I recommend it: I would not.

Will I read it again: I will not read this book again. I will try other books by this author though.

More About the Author

Killian McRae would tell you that she is a rather boring lass, an authoress whose characters' lives are so much more exciting than her own. She would be right. Sadly, this sarcastic lexophile leads a rather mundane existence in the San Francisco Bay Area. She once dreamed of being the female Indiana Jones, and to that end she earned a degree in Middle Eastern History from the University of Michigan. However, when she learned that real archaeologist spend more time lovingly removing dust with toothbrushes from shards of pottery than outrunning intriguing villains with exotic accents, she decided to become a writer instead. She writes across many genres, including science fiction, fantasy, romance, and historical fiction.
