A Great Black/Folk Metal Masterpiece!, July 5, 2009
This review is from: Talvenranta (Audio CD)
And yet another masterpiece from "Mustan Kuun Lapset", though might not be their best of all time, 2002's Suruntuoja & 2003's Kauniinhauta are still on the top for me! But it IS just as great!
Once again MKL comes back with the very unique mixture of Thrashy, Black influenced metal with their Folk elements that can never get you wrong! Though the songs might not stand out as strong as 2003/2003 albums, and not as easy to stick in your mind, but most of them will actually just for a few years to come...
This album has only a few short Violin passages, quite memorable as the ones in the previous releases, but this time the guitar riffs are pretty fast, unique and very memorable! While the voices of "Pete Lehtinen" and "Pete Tamminen" serve a great part giving the MKL sound print the band was always recognized for, the low & high pitched performances of the two are very unique, and you can almost understand every word they're saying (taking into account you know any Finnish at ALL)
Unfortunately, the Bass sound is almost buried in the production, the only place you can hear it clearly is the intro of "Lyhyesti" and "Kopros Fagein", which only lasts for seconds! Resulting in a production that is quite clear, and a bit trebl-ish in overall, though the separation and stereo-distribution of sounds is quite good. Reminds you of the production of "Kauniinhauta".
The general pace of the whole album is speedy, sad-yet-joyful, and extremely enjoyable, and has a trace of the old soul of the old school, such as in the song "Lucifer & Rosemary", and even when it tends to get slower, it still is far from "Doominess", and it gets back into the fast-paced Black-folk thrashy sound.
The last song, Aria, makes the perfect conclusion for the whole album, being a bit slower in tempo than the rest, it holds within some great guitar riffs and violin parts than can never be forgotten. And it tends to better cover the rather melancholic side of MKL, and maybe this is the only place where you'll hear the clean male vocals (before Morfiinisiivet), the only negative point here is the drums not being as creative as it used to be, but still, it just serves right!
In overall, such a great album, I've had a hard time getting it back in 2005 when it was almost unavailable, and well, not really proud of it but, I had to download each single song off P2P and it took me over 5 months to collect 7 tracks!!! The last two songs where later sent from a Finnish friend who was lucky enough to pre-order. But at last, 4 years later, I found it on Amazon, and it does deserve EACH SINGLE PENNY I've paid for it!
If I may rate, I give it 94/100.
