5.0 out of 5 stars Throwback to When Rap was Fun
I grew up on artists like Geto Boys, Ice-T, Wu-Tang, NWA. But there was also a time when it was okay for Hip Hop to be fun. Sugarhill Gang, Biz Markie, Fat Boys, Black Sheep. Chingo Bling is a throwback to the days when you didn't have to be too hard or too pop to have a hot rap record. Tamale Kingpin is a rare album that balances hot beats with clever and funny...

Tamale Kingpin is a rare album that balances hot beats with clever and funny lyrics. Take one part UGK, one part George Lopez, a dash of Cash Money beats, and you've got Chingo.

What really makes Tamale Kingpin stand out as that it's got better beats than 90% of the Down South hip hop albums dropped in the last 10 years, from start to finish. If you're a fan of the No Limit or Cash Money sounds (when Manny Fresh was producing), you're going to love this album.

My favorite cut on the album is "Pan de Derf", with Chingo and Fade Dogg trading verses over a ridiculously hot beat. New Orleanians like myself will love the bounce-themed "Walk Like Cleto", and Chingo's lyrics show a lot of influence from NOLA bounce artists. "Masa & Da Flour" is a funny nod to fellow Houston rapper Scarface's "Money and the Power" track from his '91 solo debut, and "F**k a Major Label" is probably the second best track on the album.

The guest spots on the album are great. Chingo's got artists from my home state like bounce king 5th Ward Weebie, as well as BR rapper Max Minelli. The rest of the guest features are a who's who of H-Town artists, from Paul Wall to Mike Jones.

Bottom line, this is a fun album. If you love Down South Hip Hop beats and party lyrics, Tamale Kingpin is a great CD to own. If you've ever bumped Paul Wall, UGK, Mike Jones or Lil Flip, this CD is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars He's ill, October 12, 2004
This review is from: Tamale Kingpin (Audio CD)
I know Chingo Bling personally, he's not degrading Latins, he's reppin us. If you knew him, you'd understand. The things he says in his music are those that the dudes we hang also would say or use all the time. His music shows that Latins can be credible and funny. If he wasn't a real rapper he sure wouldn't be makin hits with Don Cisco, who takes music really serious. He makes some tyte music and if you're lookin for the perfect jams to throw in at a party to get people hyped... you've found it. Especially listen to "Swing on Deez Nutz" he comes sick with it in that song, but also makes you laugh. Guys can relate, and if nothing else, girls get turned on. If you're offended you don't know much about rap. It's a cool cd to listen to kickin it with friends and when you're tryin to dance, take it as a grain of salt the things he actually says.
