Customer Reviews

I've enjoyed all of the books in this series and would love it if Quinn wrote more.
Caitlin
I found the villain to be likeable and that details were added to the story that didn't fit his personality to make the reader dislike him.
Amazon Customer

Tamed by the Highlander is the third in the Children of the Mist series and the fifth in Quinn's Highlander romances that include the first two MacGregor/Grant romances (see full list below). It's a good one and continues the romances of the children of Callum MacGregor and his friend, Graham Grant.

This one carries us into the reign of King James II, who at age 51 in 1685, ascended to the throne of England upon the death of his brother, Charles I. Connor Grant, son of Graham Grant (A Highlander Never Surrenders), faithfully served King Charles for seven years and is now a Captain in the army of the new Catholic King James. The girl Connor loved and left back home in the Highlands, Mairi MacGregor (the girl who told him she loved him when she was 6 and he was 9), considered his devotion to an English king a betrayal and refused to join him when he asked her. For seven long years, the two have been separated, each believing the other at fault. Connor has racked up his victories on the battlefield and in the bedroom, the latter much to Mairi's chagrin. Now they are reunited in the court of King James where Mairi has come for information on the Covenantors. The love they still feel will be revealed amidst treachery surrounding the new king. Already there is a cloud over the throne cast by the Protestants and William of Orange.

As always, Quinn's story is true to history and weaves the characters' lives into the events that affected the times. Unlike some "historical" romance, Quinn actually gives you real history, not just a general background setting. Her characters are well developed and believable. Connor is a wonderful Highlander, a warrior son of a warrior, who has seen the wisdom of serving the English king, even though his heart is still in the Highlands.

TAMED BY A HIGHLANDER by Paula Quinn is an exciting historical romance set in 1685 Whitehall Palace,England. It is Book 3 in "The Children of The Mist" series, but can be read as a stand alone. Format: Mass Market Paperback
In 1678 Connor Grant left the Highlands to join the forces of English King Charles II. He pledged to his beloved Mairi MacGregor that he will return to her. While he is away, Mairi learns swordplay.

In 1685 Mairi is undercover at the English King's court. Her mission is to determine who has betrayed the Highlanders as families and whole villages have been murdered and destroyed based on religious persecution. She thinks Connor is one of the traitors especially after they meet at court. Still in love, he tries to persuade Mairi he has not betrayed his people. Meanwhile in the shadows the traitor watches both of them preparing to pounce if need be.

The latest MacGregor seventeenth century romance (see Seduced by a Highlander and Ravished by a Highlander) is an engaging tale that emphasizes the complexity of the Scottish-English relationships even with the Stuart dynasty sitting on the thrones of the entire British Isles. The story line is fast-paced as courageous Mairi banned by her father from coming home to fight goes undercover while believing her beloved betrayed his people and their love. This Highlander historical is terrific due to the battling lead couple struggling to identify a traitor in dangerous times.

Connor Grant felt he needed to serve his king and family, so he left the love of his life behind to fulfill his duties. Connor tried very hard to move on without his love, and he thought perhaps he finally had. Yet, he was soon brought to the startling realization that he hadn't moved on when he is forced to spend time with Mairi MacGregor in the king's court.

Mairi MacGregor couldn't forgive Connor for seeing fit to take up his familial duties and deserting her. He knew she would never want to abandon their homeland, and she couldn't understand how he could put other things before her . . . not if he loved her! Mairi isn't too happy to be forced into his company while at court, but she still plans on helping her fellow friends in uncovering the intrigue and plots that involve their homeland.

Tamed by a Highlander was a story of two stubborn donkeys that refused to compromise, until they realized what they could ultimately lose. I had eagerly anticipated Connor's story from reading the other two stories in The Children of the Mist series. I wanted to see if he was as awful as he sounded and what his explanations would be for his womanizing ways. To my delight, I found that Connor wasn't that awful and that Mairi needed to grow up and stop expecting everyone to give in to her demands.

Mairi had a good reason for not wanting Connor to go to England and fight. Later, Connor sees and experiences some of that in Tamed by a Highlander. That was a very nice touch, and I think it helped for him to look at things from her perspective as well.

The explanation that Connor gave for his womanizing ways in Tamed by a Highlander irritated me a bit.
