Tameme is the annual bilingual magazine of new writing from North America Canada, the United States, and Mexico. What does tameme mean? It is a Nhuatl word for porter or messenger. Our hope is that Tameme will play that role, bringing new writing both north and south. For example, here are Alberto Blanco, Jaime Sabnes, and Juan Volloro translated into English; Margaret Atwood, Edwidge Danticat, and A. Manette Ansay translated into Spanish. I think you will agree: the originals are exquisite, the translations beautiful, and the juxtapositions very interesting. Tameme is also a forum for the art of translation. In the back you will find a section devoted to the translator's notes, some of them technical, some very personal, others reflections on the art of translation in general. One of our favorite reflections is from Geoff Hargreaves' notes: "The pleasure resides in catching the echo of an authentic sounding voice, which is not exactly yours or the author's, but the speech of an imaginary figure with feet that straddle the border." TAMEME presents first-rate literary translations of living authors' recent work, which in many cases are the first translations of that authors' work into Spanish or English. It also serves as a forum for the art of Spanish-to-English and English-to-Spanish literary translation. Adds Editor C.M. More About the Author
I've been living in and writing about Mexico for many years. Twenty three, last I counted. I'm the author of THE LAST PRINCE OF THE MEXICAN EMPIRE, an historical novel based on the true story, which was named one of the best books of 2009 by Library Journal; also, MIRACULOUS AIR: Journey of a Thousand Miles through Baja California, the Other Mexico; a collection of Mexican literary works in translation with the somewhat misleading title (I mean, it's not a guidebook!), MEXICO: A TRAVELER'S LITERARY COMPANION; and SKY OVER EL NIDO, which won the Flannery O'Connor Award for short fiction. A long overdue tribute to the art of translation!,

Tameme makes a huge contribution to the literary scene of North America,as it makes available in the same volume exquisite writing from Canada,Mexico and the United States.But probably its main virtue is that it presents the pieces written in the original language and then translated either to Spanish or English.All of the translations are as beautiful as the original pieces.The editors should also be commended for the excellent presentation of the book.I will be anxiously waiting for a new number in what should become a series!

A Bilingual Joy to Behold,

C. M. Mayo must receive kudos for this bilingual literary journal. Her goal is, in some ways, modest: to bring new Canadian, Mexican and U.S. writing to readers of English and Spanish. The execution of this goal, however, cannot be dismissed as simple. Anyone who has read different translations of the same work realizes that a bad translation can suck the soul out of a fine piece of literature. Here, with works translated either from English to Spanish, or vice versa, nothing is lost. This first issue of Tameme includes short stories, poems and essays by such wonderful writers as Margaret Atwood, Juan Villoro and Jaime Sabines, to name a few of the many authors featured. My favorite piece is "New York Day Women," by Edwidge Danticat, but there is something here for everyone. If you love literary journals, this one is a must.
