Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This is a breezy narrative of a typical RV (recreational vehicle) tour of Alaska and the Yukon by a retired California couple. It is full of CB chatter, jokes, the names of people encountered and even of some of the drinks and dishes consumed. Interspersed is practical information for those considering similar undertakings. Among the numerous travel accounts by visitors to Alaska this one is entertaining, but it is by no means authoritative or unique. Its appeal will be limited to RVers. For larger public libraries serving a mobile retired clientele, and as a supplement to the standard guidebooks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Taming Mighty Alaska, May 19, 2000
This review is from: Taming Mighty Alaska: An Rv Odyssey (Paperback)
I read this when it first came out and absolutely loved it! A trip with the Andersons is like a visit with old friends. This book is a must for anyone traveling to Alaska by car or RV and a delightful addition to any armchair traveler's collection. Descriptions of scenery are vivid but the interactions with the people the Andersons meet are lively. Perhaps the dialogue, which covers everything from purchases from clerks to other camper's tales of glory and woe, is the most appealing feature of the book. Parts of it make me laugh so hard I have to put the book down for a bit. I reread this book a couple of times a year. If you enjoy this you may also want to read Bill Bryson's "A Walk in the Woods" and "The Lost Continent"; Emily Kimbrough and Cornelia Otis Skinner's "Our Hearts Were Young and Gay" and another older book of William C. Anderson's called "Home Sweet Home Has Wheels, or Please Don't Tailgate the Real Estate."

4.0 out of 5 stars Another entertaining Anderson saga, October 17, 2011

I thought I had all of Anderson's books (in hardcover) until I saw this one crop up. I don't know how I could have missed this one. It's up to his usual standard; humorously written about characters you'd like to know. I'm planning on going back and re-reading some of the earlier works.

The only thing that marred the reading experience on the Kindle were the numerous typos/formatting errors. Seems like publishers don't want to pay anybody to proof-read their books anymore.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, fun and informative book, January 21, 2012

This was a great, enjoyable read - I felt as if I were traveling right along in the RV. The great historical references and background in this book give the reader a good look at Alaska and its history. After researching the author, I was saddened to learn he's not longer alive - truly a loss. Not only is it informative but it is just plain fun to read - great humor and great writing. Now to track down the author's other books for more fun reading.
