About the Author

Diabetic, diabetes educator, author, Lee walks in your shoes every day. He writes from both clinical and personal experience with honesty, compassion, and humor. He works full-time running the diabetes program for a rural nonprofit clinic in one of the poorest counties in the United States, and is a tireless advocate for diabetes care and awareness. He is the author of The Born-Again Diabetic: The handbook to help you get you diabetes in control (again); and of LifeAfterDx, a long-running internet health blog. He is a community faculty member for the diabetes specialty program of Project ECHO at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center, where he is engaged in teaching community health workers diabetes education skills via telemedicine. He also sits on the Steering Committee of the New Mexico Diabetes Advisory Council and is a state board member of the American Diabetes Association.

More About the Author

William "Lee" Dubois (called either Wil or Lee, depending what part of the Internet you're on) is a multi-award-winning author and diabetes columnist. His four English language diabetes titles have collectively won 16 national and international book awards. He pens an edgy Dear Abby-style advice column every Saturday at diabetesmine.com; writes the Diabetes Simplified column for dLife; and is one of the ShareCare diabetes experts. His work also appears in Diabetic Living magazine, the largest-circulation diabetes magazine in the country.

As time allows, he still writes at his original blog, LifeAfterDx, one of the early diabetes social media sites. He has Type-1 Diabetes and wears a CGM.

In addition to writing, Dubois has spent the last half-dozen years running the diabetes education program for a rural non-profit in the mountains of New Mexico, in the fifth-poorest county in the United States. He's one of the original community faculty members for the University of New Mexico's School of Medicine's Project ECHO.

He says he'll get some rest after the cure.

I was very dissapointed with this book. It is no longer than a magazine article. It's published by Red Blood Cell Books out of Las Vegas in 2009. I wouldn't search out any of their other publications. Go to the David Mendosa site or get the book Blood Sugar 101 if you want real substantial information. The book is 4 1/2 inches x 3 1/2 inches and that's the minimal amount of information. It,s definitely not worth $9.95

This book is funny, informative and a quick read. Wil's kept all the jargon out and packed it full of information that will help anyone who's just been diagnosed with diabetes. Most people with diabetes have type 2, and this book is most appropriate for them. But even folks with type 1 can learn lots here.

I especially like how Wil introduces that most feared topic, diabetes complications or "scary-assed-side-effects". We all know people whose relatives were stricken with various complications. But as he says "Make tiny changes in your eating and activity, and you change your health destiny. You call the shots."

I think this book should be required reading for everyone who's just been told they have diabetes. The information is enough to get you started on the right road. Wil doesn't hold anything back, but he provides you with a great set of rules for starting your life with diabetes.

Disclaimer: Wil gave me a copy of his book, and I read it without any expectations. I'm thankful I had a chance to learn the basics again after 36 years with diabetes.

Newly diagnosed with diabetes? If you can't take the time to read anything, read this book anyway. It's short, encouraging and gives you the basics of what you need to know to live with diabetes instead of dying with diabetes
