If you plan on building more then one model kit in your lifetime, this tool set is a must-have. A quick rundown of the contents:

Plastic Side Cutters - these are designed SPECIFICALLY for cutting the pieces from your plastic trees. I used normal ole' hardware side cutters, and they got the job done, but these will get the job done ten times better. You're gonna get perfect, clean cuts every time and no blemished plastic. The tip is also smaller and slimmer than the typical hardware store cutter, which is perfect for getting into tiny nooks. Definitely a must have.

Plastic File - Used to file away marks on pieces left after cutting. Again, any old file will work the same, but this one is shaped and sized nicely for the task at hand. Very good to have around and I have got plenty of use out of it.

Angled Tweezers - A MUST HAVE for applying decals, but also has other assorted uses. Mostly, though, if you've ever tried to apply a tiny decal to a kit, you know how frustrating it is to get perfect. This item remedies the problem one hundred percent.

Craft Knife - again, I have hobby knives lying around that work just as fine as this one already. This one is better than others in particular situations, so it's a welcome addition.

Two screwdrivers - They're screwdrivers. Not much to say here. If you happen to have a kit that requires screws, and you don't own a normal household assortment of screwdrivers, you're in business.

All in a nice little hard plastic case. If you are even considering getting into plastic model kits, buy this right away!

This is a great tool box. Specially if you're buying this cause you've got some Gundam Kits to build. I've got my second Gundam kit which is a 1/60 scale kit and unlike the previous kit this needed some tools and once I got the kit I purchased this Tool Set which I had it saved on my wish list. It's really good quality. I love the box since it didn't come with the purple plastic holder that shows on the pic. The plastic is clear so you would see the black come through which I really liked. Very good price for this type of quality. Recommend to anyone. I've posted some pics so check them out ; )

When I started building plastic models, I bought tools that left my models scratched, chipped and jagged all over. It wasn't until I did some websurfing that I found the one product that meets all my modeling needs--Tamiya's basic tool set. This includes a side cutter for separating plastic parts; a metal file for smoothing out rough edges; a pair of angled tweezers for handling small parts; two screwdrivers for the models that require them; and a retractable knife with a snap-off blade. Most of these tools (two of which are untested) fulfill their purpose well, and all the tools make this set a must-own for any hobbyist.

This review will be revised with further testing of the product.

Since this product includes sharp objects, parental supervision is strongly advised if the product is being used by children.

This set is everything you need to start scale modeling, save for paint supplies and perhaps a pin vise. The tools are made in Japan and of very high quality- great for detailed work and clean separation of parts. The blade and side cutters in particular are amazingly sharp and precise.

I was using a regular lock-back blade instead of side cutters before I picked this up, and despite the fact that it was really sharp I'm now wondering how I could have lived without these purpose-built tools.

I purchased this set for Gundam models. I already had generic equivalents to most of these tools, but I wanted to see what a difference some premium, brand-name tools could make. In my experience, not much. I'm not sure if my hopes were too high, or if these are just budget-grade tools in a nice box with the Tamiya name. To break it down:

Sprue nippers (side cutters) - I had the highest hopes for these, after years of using dollar-store wire cutters. Would I be able to cut parts flush, without discoloring stress marks and sometimes tearing? Nope. If I want a nice, unblemished part, I still need to cut well away from the part and then take off the nub with a knife and sanding stick.
Tweezers - Tips don't meet evenly or especially flush. I improved this with a bit of sanding, but they were disappointing out-of-the-box. Also, the insides still had grime from the manufacturing process, leaving nasty marks on the first few clear decals I picked up with them.
Knife - The surprise winner of the kit. I'm used to using a hobby (Xacto-style) knife with #11 or #16 blades. I found this knife to give cleaner cuts with less force (thus better control) when cleaning off nubs. Hope I can get replacement blades as good as the one it came with.
Screwdrivers - Yep, those are screwdrivers.
File - Honestly, I have always used sanding sticks in place of metal files, so I haven't touched this yet.

In summary, these tools work fine for what they are, but in my experience they generally didn't perform any better than generic equivalents that you can pick up for much less.

(As a final note, because they fit so nicely in their box, I find myself obsessively packing them back into it when I'm done with them. I can't decide if this is a good or a bad thing.)
