Highly detailed 1/48 scale assembly model kit of the Heinkel He162 "Volksj?ger" ("People's Fighter"), a single-seat, single-engine jet fighter aircraft of the German Luftwaffe in World War II. Also called the "Salamander" and the "Spatz", the He162 was the last attempt by Germany to turn the tides of air war against the Allies in Europe. The He162 featured a small but sleek streamlined fuselage. A BMW 003 Sturm axial-flow turbojet was mounted in a pod nacelle on top of the fuselage and directly aft of the cockpit, and the 162 was fitted with retractable tricycle landing gear. The He162 was intended by the Luftwaffe to be built in large numbers and flown by relatively inexperienced pilots, but neither scenario worked out as planned. Very few He162s were ever completed, and even if German industries were able to produce large number of 162s, it is doubtful that enough able pilots could be found to take the 162s into combat. As it turned out, even a highly experienced pilot could easily fly the He162 apart if not properly briefed about the intricate flight characteristics of the type. This kit by Tamiya is one of the best 1/48 scale assembly model kit of the He162 on the market. Model kit features: 1/48 scale assembly He162 Salamander accurately reproduces plane's unique form, including streamlined, rocket-like fuselage, down to bent wing tips and twin vertical tail fins. Twin spars connect wings to fuselage for precise and solid attachment. Counterweight in front balances out heavy rear section. Canopy can be open or closed. Ejector seat can be removed even after assembly. Molded parts depicting cockpit and landing gears exhibit an amazing level of detail. Includes accurately scaled-down replica of full size BMW003 engine. Engine compartment pieces are included and may be switched freely even after assembly. Engine can be displayed separately on a dolly (included). Includes 1 pilot figure and 4 sets of markings.
