4.0 out of 5 stars A GREAT book, teaches children of extinction turtles face, September 14, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Tammy Turtle: A Tale of Saving Sea Turtles (No. 11 in Suzanne Tate's Nature Series) (Paperback)
Tammy Turtle is a book about a loggerhead turtle, which follows her life from hatching to reproduction. Amazingly, Tammy returns to the same beach where she hatched to lay her eggs. While at the beach, she finds her sister, whom she had not seen since their race to the sea. This book is informative, teaching children about the reproduction cycle of turtles, how humans help them in their fight for survival, and how litter poses a serious threat to turtles. Children learn how they can help animals by not littering. One can easily go online and develop a lesson plan focusing on TAMMY TURTLE. My plan includes geography (map of loggerhead turtle habitats), dexterity (coloring sheets), and basic math (dot to dots).

I am so happy i got this book for my children. Very well written and illustrated, helps children to learn about the sea turtles and engage their curiosity to learn more on the wild life and the chain reaction /influence of our actions. I Added extra activities and made a project along with the reading of this book that will stay for ever in their minds and hearts -and remember that we are not alone in this planet ...

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun and accurate book on life as a loggerhead in North Carolina!, February 21, 2009

This review is from: Tammy Turtle: A Tale of Saving Sea Turtles (No. 11 in Suzanne Tate's Nature Series) (Paperback)
This children's book by award-winning writer Suzanne Tate (and well illustrated by James Melvin) reviews the life of a loggerhead hatchling, Tammy. Tammy hatches in her nest, digs her way out (along with her siblings), and races for the water. She makes it to the deep ocean, but swallows plastic and ends up being rescued and rehabilitated. Finally, it is time to lay her eggs near the beach where she emerged.

Okay, here are some small things that I would have liked to see modified:

1. Claws on flippers, and NO eyelashes!

2. A better depiction of "100" eggs on first page. Taking into account the number of eggs visible in a cross-section, this nest contains hundreds of eggs, not 100.

3. One illustration seems to depict eggs on surface of beach, not buried, as turtles hatch.

4. No smiling when Tammy gets a flipper tag!

And here's what I did see that I did like:

1. Lots of factoids throughout.

2. Note of nest "boiling" with emerging hatchlings, and rush to get to the water and beyond.

3. Depiction of plastic as a lethal hazard.

4. Depiction of helpful volunteers.

5. Men and women both working with the turtles.

6. Dedication "To Conservation Volunteers Everywhere."

7. Notes for more mature reader/parent/teacher on inside front cover.

This is a good book to bring into a classroom (and leave it there with the teacher and students).
