Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2?Designed as introductions to multicultural folktales, these series entries have the best of intentions but are disappointing in their execution. Palazzo-Craig's simplified retellings drain dramatic tension from the stories, leaving them flat and unsatisfying. The Emerald Tree, an African quest tale, is the best of the three, but it is still devoid of interesting plot or strong characterization. Readers never learn why the earth is flooded in How Llama Saves the Day, a Peruvian tale, and the resolution of Tam's Slipper, a Cinderella story from Vietnam, is so bland that it is anticlimactic. The source notes in all three titles are barely adequate, and the cartoonlike illustrations, while colorful, lack vitality. Young readers would be much better served by myriad existing picture-book folktales.?Donna L. Scanlon, Lancaster County Library, PA
