This 1911A1 replica of the classic .45 caliber real McCoy is my favorite of all the available 1911A1 model air pistols on the airgun market. Tanfoglio [Italy] enjoys a good reputation in Europe for a quality product and their attention to detail in this CO2 powered 4.5mm 18 round steel firing BB pistol is excellent. IMO, the best I've seen [and I have a rather extensive collection of both steel BB and pellet and 'combo' BB/pellet firing airgun rifles and pistols] and I find the "Tanfoglio Witness" 1911A1 replica is as close as possible, detail wise, including the blow-back feature and metal design, to the real thing. It even 'feels' like the real thing.

I would highly recommend having a 2nd "back up" clip for the gun. It's the kind of clip that contains both the BB's and the CO2 cylinder within the clip. I like that system because of the built-in additional safety issue involved. To explain: when the clip is removed, so is the power source. Think about it. There are far too many horror stories where even well experienced airgun hobbyists start fiddling with a CO2 pistol [the ones where the power source remains in the gun and the BB ammo is usually a thin clip that pops in there] and while trying to find why the gun jammed, the BB or BB's plural that may be stuck in the barrel suddenly are 'blown' out because a moment of non thought forgot that the CO2 cylinder was still in the gun and the 'jammed' BB winds up in the user's leg or foot .... or worse! Don't scoff, it's happened! In short, with this gun, when the clip is removed, so is the gun's CO2 power source.

That said, and as another reviewer duly pointed out, the gun can jam [like any other airgun] with the usual problem being a BB caught in the back of the barrel. It happens.

I ordered this pistol based on other reviews. I already owned the Winchester Model 11 and have found that pistol a blast to shoot even though it lacked the realism available in the Tanfoglio 1911. So I had some spare reward cash to spend and decided to use it on the Tanfoglio. My first impression was "wow". The weight and feel of this pistol is amazing. The functionality is incredible. I ordered 3 more mags to go with it and loaded up some co2s with a drop of pelloil and gave it a workout. This pistol almost feels like a 1911 chambered to .22. The co2 life is much shorter than the Model 11 but I suspect much of the charge is used up on the blowback. It locks back fully (unlike the 60% of the Winchester) after the last bb is spent. I have to admit the Model 11 shoots tighter groups at higher velocity and more mags per cylinder... but man, what fun the Tanfoglio is. After roughly 1000 rounds through it I have found that the thumb safety is suspect to releasing the hammer when disengaging so one must be careful. I was able to make a fix on it but it took some trial and error to get it there. While searching online for a safety solution and disassembling the pistol I decided to modify it to my liking and polish the slide and frame. I also added some real 1911 grips that fit with some minor modification on the underside for co2 clearance. Once it was completed I have a custom 1911. In closing the Pro's on the pistol: quite realistic, pretty accurate (2 inch groups @ 10 yards) with sights dead on, field strips much like the real thing for cleaning, strong blowback (especially the first mag through a co2).Read more ›

I was annoyed that my clip sprung a leak the second time I loaded it... but I decided to edit my review based on the clip and the gun separately.

With the clips, you take a gamble every time, I guess. My clip held up for only one full round of shooting (18 bb's), loaded it a second time, started leaking. It's unusable now. I was going to send the gun back, but decided not to send the whole thing back just over the clip.

Now the gun itself is great. My uncle owns a real 1911 and says that it looks as real as his. If you want a CO2 1911 that looks and feels like the real deal, you absolutely can't go wrong with this gun. My uncle likes it so much he's debating on getting one as well!

BE AWARE however that although you CAN replace the grips with real ones, a bulge on both sides prevents you from putting solid grips onto the gun. My grandpa was nice enough to carve out the inside of some original 1911 grips so that they would fit, and did a wonderful job. If you want custom grips, and want them to fit as soon as you get them, the insides of them needs to be hollow.

My review is now three stars.
Five stars for the gun itself.
One star for the clip.

I'm ordering a new one now. I WILL be sending this back if it does not hold up. $30 is a little too much for a clip that may or may not work.

EDIT: The new clip works great, shot about 10 or 11 cartridges worth today, no leaking whatsoever. Must've got a dud with my gun. Refurbished clip perhaps? Keeping the rating at a three star, but would recommend the gun slightly more. Still a gamble on the clip.
