5.0 out of 5 stars Tangerine is Sweet, May 22, 2001
By
This review is from: Tangerine (Audio CD)
After dancing the night away to DJ Heather at an LA party and hearing her choice selection of tracks, I just had to see if she would be that good on my stereo. After listening to Tangerine I can say she's all that and more. Not only does she know how to select her vinyl, but she knows how to spin it as well.

She begins with the deliciously deep Discorobot, which is a perfect way to ease the listener into what is to come. From there she gradually transitions to No Time to Lose, each track becoming more progressive and funky and less deep. The real energy of the CD comes during From the Vaults, which is precisely placed at track number eight. By that time you're ready to jump out of your booty and shake your seat. The energy level only increases from there until the listener is gently brought down by Window Pain.

Aside from her selection, DJ Heather is able to take the listener higher and higher with each twist of the knobs. Her timing and levels are so precise, and she deftly displays just how much of a musical intrument the turntables actually are. If you love good, rich, danceable house music, you will no doubt love this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars DJ Heather shows what she's got., May 11, 2001

One of the lesser known house labels (but quality) "Afterhours" comes off with another sweet mix, this time from DJ Heather. I've done reviews for other Afterhours mixes, (Comp. One & Garden of Eden) and they seem to have a good idea of what's going on in electronic music. This cd has the tone of aggressive house music, not hard house but aggressive progressive, very much in the same vein as the "Can You Feel It" cd by Charles Feelgood. This has a fast tempo and is very energetic. No chance of you falling asleep through this set. There's plenty of booming beats and enough bass for any deep house nut out there. The mixing is good and the choice of music is excellent. There is hardly any vocals here but the set still comes of nice. Cuts of choice are "Mind Magic", "Groove On", Expansion Module", "All In My Mind", "10", "Shake It For Me", and "Window Pain." This cd has 16 cuts and almost all of them are slamming. Nothing wrong with this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good album, September 28, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Tangerine (Audio CD)
This album is one of my favorites. It's a real shame it's out of print because it's a great example of how mix CD's should be made. It starts out slow, works its way up-tempo and then ends up somewhat slow and mellow. DJ Heather is big on variety, which may frustrate those who prefer consistent vibes. I like it either way, as long as it's done well. DJ Heather does it well.

This is a MUST HAVE!! By far one of the best House CD's I've ever invested in! DJ Heather manages to give you a some funk, soul and just a little taste of vocals. Mixing is superb and the choices of vynl or amazing!!

I'm not a huge fan of house, but DJ Heather has given me a different perspective. I would highly recommend Tangerine to anyone!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth the money! 4 1/2stars, August 4, 2001

DJ Heather does a fine job mixing some well selected tracks. The music manages to be energetic at some points and mellow at others, yet DJ Heather juggles both well. There are few vocals here, but the CD doesn't lack without them. Although "Tangerine" sometimes lacks variety, anyone who loves House music will find it to be well worth the money!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good House Music, June 22, 2001

Being from Chicago I buy Heather's tapes at the record store all the time. I'm a huge fan. The cd is very good. Tight mixing skills but the track selection is not as good as some of the tapes I have of hers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deep House Love-Fest, October 9, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Tangerine (Audio CD)
Just a glance at the tracklisting for "Tangerine" will give you an idea of the quality and taste behind this mix. DJ Heather plucks tunes from the cream of both US and British deep house artists and seamlessly blends straight-up club tracks with deeper fare to satisfy both the club-goer and the serious home listener. If you love deep house mixed well, don't pass this up!

5.0 out of 5 stars Happy House at its FINEST, August 19, 2000

DJ Heather throws down. I've seen her live in Seattle only once, but it was enough to keep my eyes out for a CD. I happened across this disc by pure chance - and didn't hesitate a second to buy it. I strongly recommend this CD to anyone who loves deep happy house. HOUSE HEADS!!

The strong, steady beats make for a full hour work out without offering any dull moments to catch your breath. Lively melodies and high spirited dittys keep you interested and anxiously anticipatiing the next transition, which are all wonderfully blended.

This CD is now at the top of my *Best CD's I Own* list, and it will take something significant to change that.

4.0 out of 5 stars DJ Heather works a skilled and restrained set, December 3, 2000
This review is from: Tangerine (Audio CD)
Somewhere along the line Tangerine was stamped "deep house" by mags, which is thankfully not the case. Oh it initially shares a similarly relaxed vibe, but many of the tracks sorted for your aural pleasure are sneaky-exciting; Nick Holder's "Inside Your Soul," for example, pins it's breezy melody to some snappy Latin backing, a contrast employed by most the artists here.

DJ Heather has no intention of making a coffee table album nor a house banger, exploring the restrained middle ground lying somewhere in between. "No Time To Lose" is filtered but not full-on, and several dub cuts ("Mind Magic") hold tight the reins while working in an infectious beat. And then there's the echotastic anthem "From the Vaults" by Rhythm Plate which finally begins the slow ascension into traditional, enjoyable four-four. Only Derrick Carter's "10" seems like a forced fit, setting up that vocodered and absolute bouncer "Shake it For Me" by DJ D.

Tangerine has just the jolt needed to spike some sunshine in those winter blahs. All in all, well, it's just peachy. Grade: B+
