I discovered as everyone has that the problem lies in the replacing the batteries since the chinese version that it comes with are slightly a different size than the American ones. I was able to fix the problem by taking a small flat head screwdriver and pushing the metal connectors for the batteries more towards where the batteries would be sitting inside it and connecting with the spring and the metal connector. It took some time but I was able to make this product work with American batteries and my daughter was so happy to be able to play it again. Someone should definitely be monitering these products from China since I have another product I suspect has the same problem with AAA batteries.

A few days of play with this toy and the batteries died and we had the same problem as most do with replacing the original batteries with American batteries. I have been buying everything from Hi-Watt to Ultimate Lithium batteries with no luck. Today I got so mad after spending another $9 and sat down to look closer at the dang thing and finally figured out what was wrong and here is the easy fix.

Get three new AAA batteries and aluminum foil. Fold the aluminum foil into three 1/16" thick and 1/4" squares and place in front of the + tip when adding each battery to the toy. Now you can use any battery you want!! My daughter is thrilled and instantly went into her bedroom, turned off all the lights a screamed with delight! And I'm a happy mom!

A lot of others have talked about the battery so I won't comment on the battery issue other than to say we haven't had to change it yet and it has been receiving almost constant play time (even my daughters older brothers love to play with it). I hesitated to buy it with the negative reviews but took a chance since she is fascinated with Tangled at the moment and have been very happy. You can switch it to play or demo mode. The play mode with the top cover on plays music and the "lanterns" light up the walls of the cover. The entire song plays. When you take the cover off (it goes on and off by twisting it clock-wise/counter-clockwise) the same song plays and the "lanterns" light up the walls like a small projector (works great for bathroom demo's or one wall and part of ceiling for room). So far my five year old absolutely loves it and it seems durable, lots of play even from rough older brothers and the battery is holding out.
UPDATE revised: After nearly daily use our batteries finally died out. I tried several types of batteries but they didn't work. The batteries are red and say: "HI-WATT BATTERY R03 AAA 1.5 V" It is NOT a size issue, as they seem to be the same size as a "standard" AAA-but it is a power issue. I saw some "HI-WATT" batteries on Amazon marketed to music industry and they work! Go to your local music store or search Amazon for:"Signal Flex Hi-Watt Batteries - AAA" they are only a few dollars for two or five for four; do this and you are back in business! Hope this helps with all the confusion!

In addition to the battery solution described by another reviewer (i.e., using a small screwdriver to push the + contact toward the battery housing), you can also use an X-Acto knife to cut out the small pink plastic flanges that separate the + contact from the + end of the battery. The toy works again and my daughter is delighted!

Place a small piece of foil in between the + side of the batteries and the silver connector tip. It will work just fine!

Birthday present for a child. Barely 1 day old. Lights started to dim and went to replace the batteries with 3 brand new Energizer batteries (AAA). Lantern would not work at all. Then put in 3 brand new Duracell AAA batteries. Same result. Nothing.

Put in the old batteries made by a company called HW Batteries and it worked.

Compared the Duracell and Energizer batteries to the chinese made HW and the battery tip sits higher on the HW. Apparently this is not a standard and makes this a disposable toy, which is not a good thing especially if your child gets attached to it quickly. Which if they saw the movie, etc. they will.

Where was Disney's quality control on this? Now trying to find the company they farmed this out to, but would refrain from purchasing until this is addressed whereby you can change the batteries.

My daughter found the open box before christmas.. Oops! But she LOVES it. The top comes off and it illuminates her room with 'lanterns' and plays her favorite song from the movie. Only thing I didn't like about it was the sound quality is bad, it sounds almost muffled and like its running out of batteries. Its very loud, so I don't think it is the batteries but I am going to try to change them to see if that helps. Other than that it was great for the price.

My daughter loved this until the batteries died and we came across the same battery issue everyone else has had. Contacting the manufacturer has done nothing. It's too bad because it was a cute toy that both of my kids enjoyed.
