With encouragement from none other than Weather Report co-founder Joe Zawinul, who proclaimed Tango Crash had "a totally original approach to their native country's most intriguing and complex music, the Argentine Tango," Tango Crashs astounding self-titled debut blends the melancholy of the tango with the coolness of jazz and new electronic music.
The disc is a contagious mix of tango themes intertwined with live improvisation and electronica, and features six originals by the two leaders. Other personnel include Rodrigo Dominguez (soprano sax), Marcio Doctor & Santiago Vasquez (percussion), Gabriel Rivano & Pomo Tapja (bandoneon) and DJ Peron (voice collage). Tango Crash is an irrepressible homage to the music of Argentina, one flavored with modern sensibilities and a joyful improvisational energy. Welcome to the New World of tango madness!

This review is from: Tango Crash (Audio CD)
This CD and "Otro Sanata" by Tango Crash have been steady players on my music systems for some time now. This group plays tango and well beyond, capturing moods and styles that justify the group's name. "La yumba" is relatively traditional tango with a bit of a jazz edge. "Milonga para Alberto" takes it a little farther out with a quicker rhythm and vocals thrown in here and there. "Red Love" explores even farther out, with extended improvisations on piano and accordion. "El choclo" features a wonderful vocal along with more great improv. As of this writing, no one else has reviewed this CD, which is quite surprising given the quality of music here. Evidently, the group is a duo in the studio and grows to several members when they play live. Someone else has described them as "a Germany-based Argentinian Experimental-Tango-Jazz-Electronica fusion group," which pretty much sums it up. A search on MySpace will give adventurous souls a better idea of the range this excellent group. (I don't recommend their official site, which features obnoxious pop-ups.) I highly recommend this self-titled CD, as well as the excellent followup, "Otro Sanata," which takes tango even further outside the box of tradition.
