This review is from: Tango Crash (Audio CD)
This CD and "Otro Sanata" by Tango Crash have been steady players on my music systems for some time now. This group plays tango and well beyond, capturing moods and styles that justify the group's name. "La yumba" is relatively traditional tango with a bit of a jazz edge. "Milonga para Alberto" takes it a little farther out with a quicker rhythm and vocals thrown in here and there. "Red Love" explores even farther out, with extended improvisations on piano and accordion. "El choclo" features a wonderful vocal along with more great improv. As of this writing, no one else has reviewed this CD, which is quite surprising given the quality of music here. Evidently, the group is a duo in the studio and grows to several members when they play live. Someone else has described them as "a Germany-based Argentinian Experimental-Tango-Jazz-Electronica fusion group," which pretty much sums it up. A search on MySpace will give adventurous souls a better idea of the range this excellent group. (I don't recommend their official site, which features obnoxious pop-ups.) I highly recommend this self-titled CD, as well as the excellent followup, "Otro Sanata," which takes tango even further outside the box of tradition. |
