Editorial Reviews

Recorded in late 1987, his hour-long concert documents a transitional period for Fleetwood Mac, with Lindsey Buckingham, their driving force, having left (until '97) that same year. It's a testament to Buckingham's role in the band that it took two guitarist-singers to replace him; but while Billy Burnette and Rick Vito are fine musicians with an abiding respect for the Mac legacy (they perform founding member Peter Green's "Oh Well" and "I Loved Another Woman"), this is a mostly lackluster affair, lacking Buckingham's fire and eccentric stage presence. Mainstays Mick Fleetwood and John McVie soldier on, as ever, with Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie still on hand as well, and Rumours-era tunes like "Dreams," "Don't Stop," and "The Chain" have a certain timeless appeal. But when a vest equipped with drum and percussion sounds is the highlight of the show (during Fleetwood's solo spot), you know you're not exactly witnessing history in the making. --Sam Graham

4.0 out of 5 stars Good music is good music is good music!, September 25, 2000

Many reviewers here seem to be more Fleetwood Mac fans and less music fans? I'm a Mac fan also, but was pleasantly surprised with the two new replacements (Billy Burnette and Rick Vito) in this video. One of Fleetwood Mac's strengths is the variation of songs and styles resulting from having three different singers/songwriters in the band. Instead of knocking them, I view Lindsay Buckingham's replacements as a continuation of such (and I am a Lindsay Buckingham fan also). Sure, the video may have been 'overproduced' (is it a video, or is it a concert?), and one could nitpick different areas, but many of the songs sounded better than any previous renditions I'd previously heard. I don't know which is the lead guitarist (Burnette or Vito), but I thought he put on a heckuva show, and is definitely talented. Is he a better guitarist than Lindsay Buckingham? That would be tough call, and isn't that alone reason enough to view this video? The only reason I didn't give this video 5 stars is that it's only 60 minutes long. A few more Mac favorites (heck, I'd be willing to give a few more of the newcomers' songs a try) to stretch it to around 90 minutes would have made it great.

2.0 out of 5 stars Fleetwood Mac music for rehab members, February 2, 1999

This video is perfect evidence of the downfall of the band after the departure of Lindsey Buckingham. The late eighties saw the band become a slick "hair band" with little to offer that was unpredictable. The set list from this 1988 concert filmed at San Francisco's Cow Palace sounds overproduced and anything but live. Moreover, the close-ups shots of Ms Stevie Nicks (that were redone months later after she was unhappy with her appearance) are downright comical. It's obvious they don't match the rest of the footage...What were they thinking. The long and senseless drum solo by Mick Fleetwood in "World Turning" is redundant and again, comical at best. Thank goodness, this wonderfal band redeemed itself with 1998's "The Dance" ( a much better buy). There is a God!! Skip this lemon and go for "The Dance"

I am a 20-plus year FM & Stevie Nicks fan. A true die-hard lover of this band. But, WHAT WAS THAT! The Stevie close-ups were way overdone, not to mention the Stevie hair! FM had to use two men to replace the irreplaceable Lindsey Buckingham, and to no avail, it just is not the same. Although these men are clearly talented, Lindsey, they are not. Stevie Nicks sounds as if her voice is synthesized on every song, and she rushes through, "Dreams" like she has some other very pressing engagement. Attention Fleetwood Mac fans: PASS ON THIS ONE.
