Great DVD, May 4, 2009
This review is from: Tango World Championship (Mundial) 2008 (DVD)
I have bought this DVD too and I can say the previous reviewer is indeed a little bit exaggerated.
It is not an over-the-top extremely professional production, it is indeed a private production, but realistically you wouldn't expect to see miracles for such a low price! Most other Tango DVDs on Amazon.com cost between $25 and $95, which makes this DVD great value for money.
The content is wonderful, and most of the dancers are incredible! However, any tango dancer or enthusiast knows that not all dancers can dance properly to a musical beat, and especially at this kind of competition the choreography will vary along with the music. This has nothing to do with the filming or the cameraperson; the previous reviewer seems not to know that! Also, the picture and sound quality are fine on my TV. In any case, there is a trailer on YouTube for us to see what it's like before we buy it!
I don't remember reading anywhere that this is an official production, but in any case this seems to be the only DVD of the 2008 Tango Mundial available, so I'm grateful to the producers for releasing it, so we can get a chance to see the cream of Argentine Tango in action!

What a wonderful way to see how to really do the Argentine Tango. I enjoyed watching this immensely, and would recommend this for all Argentine Tango dancers and enthusiasts.

a tango highlight, November 30, 2009
This review is from: Tango World Championship (Mundial) 2008 (DVD)
I appreciated that all the numbers were taped from start to finish, no edits, showing the dancers' entire bodies. That is, to my mind, the best way to watch dancing. I did not notice any dancing "off time" and indeed, one of the distinguishing features of Argentine Tango is that the leader interprets the music; he is not a slave to it.
I had the impression a good many of the top finalists had Latin ballroom training; there were elements and figures employed that were very familiar. The execution, though, was pure Argentine and I enjoyed the variety of interpretations.
Most Argentine Tango videos/dvds are (as noted) very expensive. The bargain price on this one made me expect a lower-quality production. On my player, the sound was very good. The colors and resolution were a bit off. It was obvious the camera was sited in a balcony, but this was not a disadvantage to me. (The balcony level allowed a down angle which was helpful in viewing the action of the dancers' frame.) The overall quality of this recording was adequate, and I certainly could see all the action clearly. Recommended.
