A Treat For the Ears,
This review is from: Tangos Del Tiempo Viejo (Audio CD)
Sometimes I buy CDs without ever having heard any previous works by an artist. Some may think its a stupid gamble, but for me the gamble most often pays off and sometimes surprises me so pleasantly that I go on to becoming a connoisseur of that artist's works. Quinteto Pirincho may well become one of those.
I encountered this CD while browsing the racks recently at a favorite Austin music store. I saw Francisco Canaro on the cover and a whole bunch of great songs listed on the back, so I already knew that I probably would enjoy its contents. Plus, the fact that these old songs were performed by a quintet made it all the more intriguing. Before the days of the great tango orchestras of the 20s-40s, and long before the birth of tango nuevo, the quintet reigned supreme. There was no battery of bandoneons, no phalanx of violins, no virtuoso showmanship to bring the music to life. There was most often the quintet, with its quaint and mournful sound, that brought tango to ordinary people. I have heard many of the early tango combos and Quinteto Pirincho epitomises that sound. What's not to like here? I enjoy the entire CD from start to finish and find it as suitable for listening to in the office as for listening to while cruising down the highway. And yes, if you are a dancer, this uncomplicated yet substantial recording is sure to have you on your feet. Tangos del Tiempo Viejo is truly a treat for the ears and is highly recommended to any tango fans who might enjoy a traditional take on some old songs.

If you're new to Argentine Tango, you may associate AT only withPiazzolla & Pugliese. This CD will give you a different perspective on it. Even though the pieces were recorded from 1950 - 1959, during a time when other tango orchestras shifted towards more dramatic concert music, all the pieces are generally fast and rythmical. This is NOT a CD to listen to for a romantic evening, but a CD, to get your feet moving and dance to it. My personal favorites on this one are "Hotel Victoria", "Canaro En Paris" and the vals "Vibraciones Del Alma". |
