The blocks are sanded wood with smooth corners, so they're nice to work with, and assembled into a square are about 4" x 4". Be aware that each book comes with one set of blocks, so if two people want to compete, you'll need to purchase two books or somehow come up with a second set of blocks.

The spiral binding makes it easy to prop the book open to any page, but there are about 18 tangrams shown per page, so it's too easy to "cheat" and compare the image you're currently working on to previous/subsequent ones. It would be more challenging if you could only see one tangram at a time.

A very nicely made product - the wooden pieces are very smooth without any splinters or sharp edges. The puzzles are awesome - during my pass-time, I try making these - some take a few minutes to solve, but some could take a few hours. It is so interesting that my daughter was trying to put together some when she was 4. You have 501, not 500 puzzles, because you have to arrange them to form a square to put them back in the packing pouch. Some of the puzzles are un-imaginable - I could not believe that you could make many of the shapes with the wooden pieces provided. The author/creator should be honored for his creativity.

I recommend this to anyone from 4 to 100+ years old - You are never too young to start training your brain, and never too old to stop. I would have bought it even if it cost twice of what it costs now.

I was looking for a book with pieces that could be layed on top of the puzzle, for my 4yo child. The pictures in this book are too small for putting pieces directly on the book. If I wanted to do that I would have to copy/enlarge the pictures. However I got this because of the wood pieces. The wood pieces are easier to handle than foam or laminated paper ones for sure. I was suprised to find that my child can spend hours making the puzzles while looking at the answer key in the back. My child will sometimes attempt a puzzle from the front of the book too, but that is beyond his grasp right now. I think it is just a matter of time before he is ready for the front of the book. I would buy again. I like this book better than some that are targeted for children (which show the outer shapes and the inner shape outlines, much like this answer key, but where where the pictures are the same size as the pieces).

This Tangram set and book are very good quality. Tangrams are excellent learning tools for spatial understanding and problem solving. Because of the nature of this toy, it is much more versatile than regular puzzles. The same pieces are used over and over to solve the many different 'puzzles' which are presented in the book. (The solutions are also given at the back of the book.)

I have only one criticism of this product. I wish it came with a container for the pieces.

This is a spiral bound book of puzzles with a set of beautiful wooden tangram shapes. The tangrams are made of quality wood and crafted well so that there are no rough edges. They are pleasant to hold, feel, and move about as you try to solve the puzzle. There is a plastic container for holding the tangrams bound into the book at the beginning, so you don't have to worry about losing your puzzle pieces. The book is broken into categories such as "animals," "tools", and "shapes" as well as many others. The puzzle outlines are small and there are about 15-20 different puzzles to a page. The puzzles in each category range from simple to very tricky, so what is offered will provide a challenge and hold the interest of a player for a long time. It is a game that can be and will be revisited repeatedly. That is a marker of a good game. The solutions are provided at the back of the book if you just have to know, but it takes the fun out of solving the puzzle independently.
This quality toy is highly recommended.

The first book arrived with the binding cracked from shipping. The online return form on Amazon is very easy. I mailed the first book back, free of charge, and Amazon sent a new copy promptly. The replacement was in perfect condition. The puzzle pieces are very nice, not a dollar store item. Overall, I am very happy with the service of Amazon and also the book. This would make a beautiful special occasion present.

My older son's piano teacher has a set of puzzle in his studio. All the kids are fascinated by playing with it, including my 3-year-old younger son. Even though it's for 8 and order, it appears that all ages enjoy this game trenmendeously. It's a great game to have at home and also a great gift for other kids.

I have bought about 60 of this great book game in many times, I use as a gift to family and friends and they really love it.

I have been selecting easy puzzles for my 6 yr olds. Designs are very imaginative. Only cons are a) ordering is random. increasing difficulty would have been nice for children. b) There is only 466 puzzles, not 500 as claimed by the title.

I am really enjoying the tangrams puzzles in the book. They are not easy, but the challenge is good. My 3 year-old great granddaughter plays with them. She can put them in the box correctly. Otherwise, she looks at the answers and tries to imitate them. My 9 and 12 year-old grandchildren and I really enjoy them.

I remember my father's set that came from the Omaha World Herald. It was a tiny ebony set that was just the right size for laying on the newspaper puzzles. They called it Pythagoras. I always loved them and was so thankful to find wooden sets. Years ago all I could find was a plastic set. I was so happy to find solid wooden sets, I got this and another set.
