4.0 out of 5 stars Better in some ways than the competition, November 12, 2005

This review is from: Tanita PD-636 Motion Pedometer (Health and Beauty)
What I like best about this pedometer is the way it looks: clean, white, simple, and modern, like Tanita's best bathroom scales, rather than translucent, bulbous, slathered with logos, and dated, like much of its competition.

It has a very simple interface once opened, and the case latches closed more tightly than other pedometers I have used (ProFit models, from Bodytronics), which I used to always find had come open by themselves and stopped counting steps. The case is also smooth enough, and has a low enough profile, to make it less often snagged by clothing and chair arms--which means that even though it lacks a supplementary "safety strap" it falls off me onto the ground less often.

But its Achilles' heel is the clip mechanism, which wears out, slowly becoming bent wider and losing its "biting power" on your belt, until it breaks altogether and becomes useless. For me this took about three months. The only other reservation I have is that the step length can only be set in two-inch increments (30", then 32", etc.).

I'm still getting another, because they're inexpensive and good-looking--they don't attract quite as much attention to themselves as others. But I wish Tanita would make the clip replaceable, and include or sell spares.
