Book Description

"Good clean fun with a charming romance, TANNED, TONED AND TOTALLY FAKING IT is a feel-good chick flick in book form." ~Karen Jones Gowen, author, Uncut Diamonds.

"...a fast, flirty read!" ~ Always a Booklover

MIKAYLA: Cute Canadian college girl turned world-famous, super- sexy pop-star practically overnight. And still figuring out if she belongs in this celebrity wonderland.

JORDAN: The only genuine guy in all of L.A. Law student, and extremely attractive. Also happens to hate the Hollywood celebrity scene.

MATT: Stupid, lying, money-loving ex-boyfriend trying to get back into Mikayla's life and ruin every hope she has with Jordan.

KURT: Personal trainer, confidant and only true friend Mikayla has in Hollywood. Questionable fashion sense included.

CHERYL: Completely psychotic manager.

The next three months? Happily ever after with Jordan. Or social and career ruin with no hope of ever finding true love . . . .

Editorial Reviews

I loved this book! Whitney Boyd does a fantastic job of creating the story of incredibly famous Mikayla Rivers, who is constantly fighting for a balance between her celebrity life, and her private life. --Steph Hansen, Swing Announcer, Assistant Music Director, Country 105--CKRY FM.

Tanned, Toned and Totally Faking It is a modern Notting Hill, told from the celebrity point of view. Instead of following the struggles of the commoner, dating the celebrity, we follow the celebrity, worried about the commoner. I enjoyed that pop star Mikayla is from Calgary, went to the U of C, and visited local Calgary haunts. Too often I see Canadian authors, especially new authors, almost attempt to hide the fact they are Canadian by setting their novels in nameless American locales. Plus, I always like a book that mentions my beloved Calgary Flames in a favourable light. --Bryan Wright, book reviewer, the CBC Eyeopener in Calgary, AM 1010.

Tanned, Toned, and Totally Faking It is an enjoyable romp through the enviable life of a pop princess....with one added challenge: Mikayla Rivers has transformed from college student to superstar overnight. Filled with star-studded cameo appearances from the likes of David Letterman, Nick Lachey, Ellen and Lindsay Lohan, this debut novel accurately portrays the unquenchable appetite of our celebrity-obsessed public. If you ever want to slip into Jessica Simpsons life vicariously, this is the book for you! Recommended usage: slip this rags-to-riches fairytale for grownups into your beach bag between your sunscreen and the latest issue of People, and head for sandy shores! --Heather Blush, singer/songwriter

1.0 out of 5 stars Were we reading different books?? July 24, 2012
By sdc2010
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I wanted to like this book i really did and with 9 (5) star reviews i thought it was going to be great or at least good. I am a fast and determined reader i read most books within two days, i downloaded this book 2 weeks ago and have read other books instead of finishing this one. The book drags, and main character just lets everyone run over her and the love interest is clueless.. I was not into this book maybe the end is what made it 5 stars but where i left off its not worth trying to finish it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Small town girly meets Hollywood February 7, 2013
By Cloudy
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Don't let the title fool you - the main character may look like an airhead but really is a down-to-earth girl with an average girl's heartache and insecurity issues. Only she's a superstar and her carefully built image as the new shooting star and idol for the masses clashes wildly with her own view of herself.

Mikayla is a very lovable girl-next-door. I enjoyed her assessment of her surroundings. She speaks with a dry humour and with a sense of self-irony. While she appreciates the financial aspect and the comfort of having people around her to attend to her needs, she also realises that the downside of her overnight success is being a public person. Wherever she goes, people want a part of her. They refuse to recognise her real personality but project on her what they have been fed by the press. She is struggling hard with those side-effects of her newfound popularity.
Mikayla is constantly being sized up by numerous Hollywood cliché characters who try to shape stars into the kind of icon they think the public wants. Her advisors and managers already got her to change her hair colour and are pushing her to alter her cup size, nose and personality, too.

We meet her at a point in her life where she is starting to wonder how she got herself in a situation where she is not allowed to be herself anymore. Most people around her aren't interested in the person she is but more in how they can make even more money, counting on her good-naturedness. I kept wanting her to just tell them to go to hell.
Having been hung-up on her ex boyfriend who unceremoniously dumped her before she became famous, she finally meets a man who she falls in love with. He isn't keeping up with celebrities and therefore doesn't know she is famous.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful July 7, 2012
Format:Perfect Paperback|Verified Purchase
From the first lively paragraph of this novel I was impressed with the quality of the writing, and was instantly interested in the characters. Ms. Boyd is an excellent writer whose debut "chick-lit" story is filled with romance, uncertainty, and humor, a delightful read.
[Quote from paragraph one of chapter one]:
"You'll have to go up two cup sizes." The man peers at me over his black-rimmed, Gucci reading glasses. "If you can get surgery done between now and then, that would be ideal, but if not, we can provide you with inserts. And if your doctor can fit you in, perhaps he can fix your nose while he's at it."
What's wrong with my nose? And my chest?
I self-consciously feel my nose with my right hand. It feels normal. The same as always. It's not misshapen or anything. Just normal. A normal nose. [end of quote]
I love the voice, the voice of a young woman who immediately lets us know how she feels: "self-conscious." And yet she's a "big star," as we soon discover. What impressed me in the first digital page on my iPad is how skillfully Ms. Boyd, the author, through lively dialogue and character-revealing description introduces the heroine. She's Mikayla, and "the man" talking to her is with Celebrity Magazine. He tells her she has "an image to maintain. Hot, Young. Sexy. You fit that perfectly right now. You are the hottest thing in Hollywood." By the end of chapter one I know why Mikayla's in Hollywood, something of her past in Canada with a boyfriend who snubbed her, her relationship with her sister and with a friend who becomes her Hollywood manager, and how she feels after six months in star-studded L.A., already with a music album out and working on a second one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun, Flirty and Fabulous! October 27, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was a very sweet story with really likable characters! I did not expect to like this book so much, but I did. Okay, so it's pretty unrealistic, however it is fiction and I found myself really wanting to believe that some famous people might actually be so sweet and down to earth. Anyone looking for something realistic and serious, may want to look elsewhere, but I thoroughly enjoyed the read. Here's the rub, I hate the cover (for one reason I won't mention on here), which is the whole reason I didn't give it five stars. Yes, I feel strongly enough about it to take it down a whole star. Sorry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Charming and Engaging August 16, 2013
By KittyL
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book easily kept my interest. It's written in a breezy, casual style and has very likeable characters. How could you not like a story about a 20-year-old brand-new rock star? It was fun to read. I picked it up and didn't put it down until I was finished.

This is probably not a fair rating because I'm 66 years old and I think only teens would really enjoy it.
