The Tannoy 402's (4" woofer) aren't for everyone; the standard sizes for recording-studio monitors are 5, 6, and 8 inch monitors, assuring that they can handle a robust bass in your music. Tannoy recognized however, that there are lots of folks like me in homes, dorms and garages, who are recording and mixing music in relatively confined spaces. So Tannoy came up with the 4 inch studio monitor. The question is, can a bantam speaker like this pull it's weight in critical listening situations like mixdown and mastering of new music? My answer is yes, with certain qualifications:
When I master a song, it has to pass 3 important tests. First, it has to pass the headphone test. That is, it has to sound good when completely unaffected by room acoustics. The headphones I use are Sony 7506's and Shure SHR440's. After that, it has to pass the studio monitor test. I've put these Tannoy's through a wide range of different types of music: folk, funk, jazz, classical, and they deliver balanced, neutral sound, which is of course what I'm looking for. Crisp, but not excessive bass, and clear, but not overly bright highs. So I have a lot of trust in them now when evaluating my music. And of course they fit perfectly in the smallish space I use for my studio. The third test is of course the car test! I drive a Prius with Premium JBL speakers. Nothing special, but perfectly representative of car systems everywhere. Once my music passes all three tests, it's good to go.
The Tannoys have fit in well with my MO, and have completely met my studio needs. If you have the space and the budget, go bigger with 5 or 8 inch monitors. But if you want a more economical form factor, the 402's will not let you down. If Amazon allowed for half stars, I would have given 4.5 stars.

I had a Bose Companion 3 II from Costco, but returned it because it made similar buzzing noise.
I searched for the smallest 2.0 system that has real good sound, and decided to give these a try. As soon as I plugged in the power, I noticed buzzing noise. I tried with/without power surge protector just in case, it made no difference. I live in a urban area with stable power source, so that can't be it. Buzzing takes off 3 stars.

I have read from somewhere else that these have noticeable buzzing noise, I thought maybe that guy got a lemon. But mine is the same so I don't think this is a lemon.

I'm just a normal computer user listening to music and play games sometimes. I thought these "monitor" speakers are closer to professional quality. Do musicians not care about these buzzing noise?

Another problem probably isolated to just this one unit is that the 1/3 of the tweeter was crushed in. I tried gently pushing it around hoping it pops out, but 1/4 is still stuck. I know audiophiles treat these as if camera professional would rarely touch the lens on the camera for deep cleaning.

I ordered 2 of these speakers, but I didn't even open up the other box. These are definitely going back.
I think I'll be trying Audioengine A2+ Premium.

My pair are dead silent when not playing music. I was hesitant before I finally decided to buy them. I chose them as my computer speakers for the convenience of the Monitor Link connectivity, the small size and good look, and the recommendations I read from audiostream.com. They didn't disappoint me. I am very satisfied with their headphone-like sound (as if they each have only a single driver, instead of two). I found myself listening to them more often than my Valhalla/HD650 combination for convenience and an even less fatiguing experience.

Ordered two of these from GearTree, they worked fine for about a week and then the right one stopped turning on.

PROS:
Good sound. These speakers got as loud as I wanted them to and sounded very nice in the process.
Not too huge, fits on my desk just fine.

CONS:
One of them stopped working after having had them for a week.

Unfortunately, because of the fact that I have recycled the original packaging, the seller will not return or refund the item. Now I'm stuck paying to ship this back to the manufacturer's third party maintenance company to hopefully be shipped a replacement... Consider the manufacturer's warranty process and a seller's return/refund process when purchasing expensive speakers such as these. And also never recycle anything either, because we all have space to hoard boxes and styrofoam packaging somewhere, right?

I'm really bummed that I'll have to wait weeks to get one of these returned; after which hopefully it won't stop working again. If I get the replacement and it works consistently I will definitely update this review!

UPDATE: I got the replacement after several weeks. Woopee. Now, the other speaker has stopped working after a few months of light use. These speakers were a HUUGE waste of money. I am not buying a Tannoy product again, nor am I ever planning to purchase through the amazon seller who sold this to me. Terrible customer service and overall a bad experience.
