Based on interviews with descendants of the people who lived along the Tanque Verde in pioneer times, information in Territorial newspapers, and documents in the files of the Arizona Historical Society, Cornelius Smith tells the story of not only a ranch and its occupants but of the pioneers of the area in general. It tells of brutal attacks upon the lonely ranches in the Tanque Verde hills and of pursuit made by the soldiers of Fort Lowell. It includes some background on the Spanish and Mexican periods of Arizona history. Finally, recent history of the area is given , and all of these things together form a saga, a finely woven tapestry of the lives, ambitions, fears and achievements of a remarkable lot of people. Illustrated with historic photographs and pen and ink drawings of the author/artist.
