5.0 out of 5 stars Think sex is over-rated? This book will change your mind!
I'm a woman, and before I found this book, I thought I just didn't like sex very much. The Muirs changed that, however. Reading their book helped me respect myself, my body, and it helped me understand how men and women are different, but can work together for something that is both natural and pleasurable, but not always 100% intuitive. 3.0 out of 5 stars A Good Gentle Start
This is a very sensitive book. The couple is gentle in their terminology and not likely to scare a person new to magick or energy exchange away.

Much of our culture looks at sex as carnal and bad no matter how loving or monogamous the relationship. This book gently introduces the reader to healing those feelings about sex in a positive way...

I'm a woman, and before I found this book, I thought I just didn't like sex very much. The Muirs changed that, however. Reading their book helped me respect myself, my body, and it helped me understand how men and women are different, but can work together for something that is both natural and pleasurable, but not always 100% intuitive. Just one warning to potential readers. This book may well fire you up to try new things. But don't necessarily expect your partner to go along with it. Instead, read it for yourself, and let him or her find the book and read it alone, without knowing or suspecting it was your idea. Many partners are intimidated by the idea of a sex how-to manual. But this book is much, much more than that. It is truly an introduction to the art of conscious loving.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, November 24, 1998

This review is from: Tantra: The Art of Conscious Loving (Paperback)
As a person new to Tantra, I purchased this book in hopes of getting a better understanding of Tantra. I received just that and more. Not only do Charles and Caroline Muir explain Tantra in clear easy to understand language, they take it a step farther and give many examples to make this a truly self help book. I would recommend this book to every couple looking to take their relationship to the highest attainable level.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great book, July 25, 2001

This review is from: Tantra: The Art of Conscious Loving (Paperback)
This is a great book for anyone who wants to work on their relationship. It is well written, interesting, and pitched at beginners without being dopey. Even though I had heard a lot of this information before, it was stated in a new way, and related to things that made me see it in a whole new light, and make new connections. The thing that is great about it, is that this couple really speaks from experience, both personal and in the groups they have led. If you are looking for a book that is just about the sex aspect, this is not it. This book is deep, and approaches intimacy from all perspectives, not just a purely sexual one. The thing that I like best about it is that it has enabled my husband and I to talk about things in our relationship in a non-confrontational way, and it gives us a vocabulary to discuss things that are sometimes hard to say. I think everyone can benefit from this perspective on learning to connect with another person, no matter what your relationship status or sexual preference may be. A great book!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the one..., May 16, 2001

I've read four books on the subject of tantra. That doesn't make me an expert on tantra, but it does make me a believable source on what books conveyed the subject matter best. This one tops the list. The other books were much longer, and much shorter on information. The Muirs' have somehow crammed a ton of info into an easy and pleasurable read. If you only get one book on the subject, this is the one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Enlightment in a spiritual way., April 24, 2001

This review is from: Tantra: The Art of Conscious Loving (Paperback)
I am a woman and have always enjoyed sex. I recently have explored Tantra. The Muirs do such an excellent, light, understandable explanation to Tantra. You will understand yourself and your partner in a whole new light. They stress on the real important things, like communication and the understanding of yourself and partner for this connection. This often misunderstood, knowledge, will help you achieve higher levels of intimacy, both mentally and sexually, as a person and together as the connection of a couple. This was a wonderful book and I highly recommend this to anyone. The Muirs have extraordinary way to enlighten you with their unique insight, in a very understandable, enjoyable, spiritual, non- intimidating way.

4.0 out of 5 stars A gentle, clear, book 4 westerners-, August 6, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Tantra: The Art of Conscious Loving (Paperback)
I bought this book because it seemed to be the clearest in its descriptions of those excerpted on Amazon. I wanted something that would show me and my partner the physical aspects of tantric practic with a minimium of religious practice but not absolutely devoid of it as you then loose the essence. Secondarily, I was looking for something that would not turn off my partner who grew up in a western religious household. It therefore needed to be truly gentle!

I suceeded. It does distill the essence with clear explanations, and inoffensive language!

My only problem with it is that it really could use more (almost abscent) and better diagrams. In the more explicit parts of the book, you really need diagrams (or a strong understanding of ananatomy). I will be using the book, but I will be using other references to understand it. If they make another edition, I hope they fix this the only real weakness.

Overall, it is worth it even if you don't use another book to work through the directions. It is an approach to the subject that is inoffensive, not overly religious to the western mind, and clear enough to get you there. Thank you

4.0 out of 5 stars A Caring Approach to Sexuality, March 15, 2003
This review is from: Tantra: The Art of Conscious Loving (Paperback)
"Tantra: The Art of Conscious Loving" by Charles and Caroline Muir is a positive discussion of loving sexuality. Charles and Caroline Muir conduct Tantric vacation seminars in Hawaii. "Tantra ..." does not concentrate upon (Western) neo-Tantric mechanics -- "Tantra ..." is *not* a 'how-to' manual. Rather, "Tantra ..." concentrates upon a couple's interpersonal and sexual relationship, encouraging both partners 'to play by the same rules' using effective communication and shared intimacy to protect and preserve their mutual investment in each other. The Muirs acknowledge that their approach might not save a spoiled relationship, but their approach might prevent a fresh relationship from spoiling.

"Tantra ..." is a textual overview of neo-Tantric sexuality that emphasizes sexual love between equal caring partners. The Muirs summarize neo-Tantric sexuality in a well-written, positive and optimistic manner, but provide no accompanying diagrams. Male ejaculatory control is discussed extensively -- in my opinion the discussed male ejaculatory control methods are *not* reliable, potentially are *very* painful, and *never* should be used as a contraception technique. The Muirs do not discuss 'safe words' -- easily remembered words or phrases signifying 'disengage immediately'. And the Muirs neglect to discuss birth control and 'safe sex' -- serious omissions in *any* discussion of human sexuality.

I believe that "Tantra: The Art of Conscious Loving" is most valuable for new partners in a fresh relationship without entrenched bad habits and attitudes. I recommend "The Art of Sexual Ecstasy: The Path of Sacred Sexuality for Western Lovers" by Margo Anand as a follow-on text for readers wishing detailed neo-Tantric information.

The Muirs do an excellent job of reaching out to their target audience in a non-threatening way. They succeed in presenting the concepts of Tantra in a way that's easy for westerners to relate to. While trying to keep things honest, they also present the material in a sensitive way that doesn't offend. They show that sex is only a part of a complete, loving relationship. Many of their suggestions are practical for people in many different situations.

Without saying so, the book seems to assume that readers already have some experience with meditation. I didn't have any prior to reading this book and I think some of the concepts would have been easier had I bought a book on meditation first.

This book is going to disappoint any practiced magicians or tantrics but it is a very good book to introduce people to a new broader way of loving their partner and sharing in the sexual experiance together.
