5.0 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Surprise!
Delicious, yet highly informative. I bought this book with a skeptical mind, as a beginner on my tantric path, I am busy weeding out the cheap, cheesy, perverted sex-hype that occurs about anything vaguely related to sexualality in a Puritanical society and the new-age nonsense. I wasn't sure at first because of the steamy sex scenes but a closer look reveals much much...

1.0 out of 5 stars Westernized "Tantric" practices and poor writing
This book recounts the experiences of a woman who thinks she has been initiated into Tantric practices; her so-called education is a Westernized and one-sided (sex-obsessed) version of Tantra. Thus, in trying to be a useful portrayal of Tantric practices, this book missed the mark completely and deserves one star (it's also not very well written). I suppose if it had been...

I wasn't sure at first because of the steamy sex scenes but a closer look reveals much much more than that. It provides a perspective that a novice or just a curious person can use to understand the process of tantric awakening, without all the complicated mythology and history. I perfect starting point, although I recommend reading other more in depth books afterwards. It has made other works about tantra much more digestible. It's an easy read, I finished it in less than 24 hours.

5.0 out of 5 stars For every romantic, not just the Tantra-oriented, December 8, 2004
This review is from: Tantric Awakening: A Woman's Initiation into the Path of Ecstasy (Paperback)
I will mention right off the best thing about this book - an incomparable, mind-boggling love scene between the author and her Tantric guru. This is the hottest and best-described love scene I have ever read, culminating in her mind-blowing orgasm that explodes into blissful oneness with the universe (her description almost takes us there).

I am an English major and long-time student of Eastern philosphies; and I have never read anything like it.

The book is psychologically and philosophically solid, I believe; although one would do well to balance it with a non-Tantric mystical work from someone truly enlightened, such as Echhart Tolle's "The Power of Now."

This book also helps men in understanding the thought processes of the female. I found it to be insightful and wonderfully simple. Many books on this subject try to be mystical or bury you in history. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is starting their (male or female) tantric path.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best written and comprehensive book on Tantra., May 6, 2002
This review is from: Tantric Awakening: A Woman's Initiation into the Path of Ecstasy (Paperback)
I first heard of Valerie Brooks on a radio interview and then I attended one of her many book lectures. She truly has carved out an enviable reputation as the premier author & lecturer on Tantra. "Tantric Awakening" is written clearly and eloquently so that the reader is able to grasp the big picture from falling in love, meditation, infinite orgasms to being one with God. The brilliance of this book is such that as you read the story of this 19 year old girl's initiation into the world of Tantra, you gain her wisdom and learn first-hand about the various aspects of Tantra. I recommend this book to anyone, not just interested in learning more about Tantra, but more about life itself. You will enjoy this personal journey you are about to experience through Valerie Brooks', "Tantric Awakening".

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book!, May 30, 2002

This review is from: Tantric Awakening: A Woman's Initiation into the Path of Ecstasy (Paperback)
This book about Tantra is one of the best written and most easy to follow. Not only does it tell a story but also provides some very insightful information about the world of Tantra and spirituality. I recommend this book from the novice, wanting to learn more about Tantra to the expert, wanting to share the experience of a young woman's journey.

I have to say that I've always felt a bit shy, sexually. This book was a true awakening for me (sorry for the pun). It really opened my eyes to a new way of looking at relationships and sexual energy and intimacy. I've read it twice now and each time I find a new layer that helps me in my life.

I picked this up from Amazon to get a better understanding of tantra because a girl I was dating was tantric. Some of the other books I'd seen were a little too abstract for me. I could see how this book would appeal to someone well versed in tantra because it's not only beautifully written but is filled with vivid descriptions of the author's emotions and energies at various points along her path of spiritual transformation. More importantly to me, it's also perfect for someone who's not familiar with the culture or practices because it offers concrete factual descriptions of tantric beliefs and practices. The author's openness and vulnerability in discussing the obstacles she faced in her personal and professional life were invaluable to me in understanding both the challenges and the benefits that the tantric world offers.

Thus, in trying to be a useful portrayal of Tantric practices, this book missed the mark completely and deserves one star (it's also not very well written). I suppose if it had been billed as erotica about nice long orgasms, I would give it two or three stars as the bar for writing in erotica is set pretty low. For readers that are looking for grounded advice in Tantric practices, I recommended Daniel Odier's accessible book Desire. Desire: The Tantric Path to Awakening
