Book Description

December 6, 1996
Say good-bye to the adversarial samurai managerial principles of the last decade. A new philosophy is sweeping the business world, one that's more in tune with a global marketplace, where cooperation, not competition, is the key to success.

The Tao Te Ching is often hailed as the wisest book ever written; for more than 2,000 years it has inspired and guided people with its precepts of harmony, communication, vision, and renewal. In The Tao of Personal Leadership, Diane Dreher combines its ancient wisdom with lessons from successful leaders to provide a practical road map to becoming not just good managers but great leaders. Illustrating her points with examples taken from real life, she explains the basic Taoist principles readers can use to make the most of their resources, transcend conflict, transform problems, adapt to change, and enrich their business, community, and personal lives.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

The 81 simple but profound poems of the Tao Te Ching have provided inspiration and guidance for some 2,500 years. Now, educator and consultant Diane Dreher has reinterpreted the timeless observations of Lao-tzu in an effort to give postmodern business leaders a novel yet practical road map to corporate management and personal fulfillment. The result, The Tao of Personal Leadership, proves the advice of the ancient Chinese philosopher is as relevant today as when it was written.

From Publishers Weekly

Dreher (The Tao of Inner Peace, HarperCollins, 1991; originally published as The Tao of Peace, Donale I. Fine, 1990) wonderfully combines her interest in the Tao and her ability to write in this excellent work. The author offers practical, sensible, simple advice in being a Tao leader. She delivers discussions of centeredness, coping with stress, making time for meditation or rejuvenation, the importance of vision, community, and self-respect-all in a readable style. Reading her text is like taking a deep, cleansing breath. The examples and quotations from the Tao Te Ching are beautifully incorporated into the overall message. Leaders and aspiring leaders should read this book. Dreher makes more points and illustrates more truths in fewer words and less meandering than any other recent book on the subject of effective leadership. Readers will want to refer to this book again and again. Recommended for all libraries.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sincere and Wise, June 15, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Tao of Personal Leadership (Paperback)
The author, Diane Dreher, apparently has some interesting credentials: Chair of an English Department, aikido practitioner, spiritual counselor, and holistic health counselor. I think that this background goes a long way toward explaining why this is an excellent book on personal leadership, and personal growth in general.

Dreher does quote from the "Tao Te Ching" and draws on Taoist ideas generally, but her sources and influences are actually much broader and more diverse than Taoism. Purist Taoists may (understandably) not care for this, but I'm not a purist, and I think that Dreher's ability to connect many dots greatly strengthens and enriches the book. What the book conveys is useful wisdom, which is what really counts. And the book is also written in a sincere and unpretentious voice, which makes it easy and enjoyable to read.

Highly recommended for anyone interested in personal growth, especially in the arena of leadership. Another similar book I can recommend, which adheres more strictly to Taoist ideas, is Real Power by James Autry.

The Tao Of Personal Leadership -.. by Diane Dreher

Review by Dr. Charles Finlay

This is truly an outstanding work for anyone thinking of getting into business. It is however, a must read for any mangers or executives. Ms. Dreher has truly written a piece of work worthy of becoming the guide book for successful team building. The successful manger will rise to the top once having ascertained the teaching in this book. Yes, this book has some stories about how a friend came to an understand that some may feel a bit trite. They are helpful for a fuller accord of the points being made. The Tao Of Personal Leadership , by Diane Dreher should be required reading for all university level business class. The book is written well and will flow deeply into the mind. It is a path to a much needed insight in business today. ( many many stars)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great insights. Inspiring. Helps you get thru the day., March 7, 1997

This review is from: The Tao of Personal Leadership (Paperback)
Tao of Personal Leadership presents some Eastern philosopy that is not well recognized in the USA. I found a great similarity between the material presented and that of Steven Covey (7 Habits, First things First). Owning this book is good and keeping it handy is recommended because some of the lessons we tend to forget in our hectic paced lifestyle. Buy the Hardcover from Amazon! (Is this a ploy for the $100 prize, or what?)
