5.0 out of 5 stars A different but needed view of programming June 5, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book takes a very different view of learning to be a programmer. Rather than focusing on a particular language and dealing with details about syntax and how to accomplish specific tasks, it takes a broad view and discusses how to think in general terms like a programmer. While there are a couple of references to specific languages, this book and what it teaches, applies to pretty much any computer language.

The focus is on how to think about problems and strategies so that you can work out for yourself the specifics. Many chapters end with a pointer to other chapters that support or contradict the advice in the current chapter. At first it seems strange to have a book contradicting itself and pointing out the contradictions. But, it works well since this is about general thinking and does not try to claim that one set of advice will apply to all situations. By understanding the contradictions you can think for yourself which advice is most appropriate to your current challenge.
