5.0 out of 5 stars THE definitive text! Very INTELLIGENT.
Thank you for this exceptional guide to the twelve animal signs. This is the only book I have ever read that so clearly explains the five elements of Asian astrology. It is explicit, colorful, very detailed, insightful, and obviously well researched. Highly recommended!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Book For Beginners
I expected a book with "a handbook of authentic chinese tradition" in its title to present a more in-depth and penetrating insight into Taoist Astrology but this book fails to deliver on the promise.

It is very basic. A good place for an absolute beginner but those with prior knowledge might find it a tad too generalized and be disappointed. If you like to...

5.0 out of 5 stars Explains animal signs and how they relate to people, March 13, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Taoist Astrology: A Handbook of the Authentic Chinese Tradition (Paperback)
Taoist Astrology can be read on many levels, ranging from "fun to look up your sign" to a deeper understanding of what makes people tick, and from this you can derive insights to the inter-play between people on an intimate as well as a business level. I've learned much about myself and about others. And, it's fun!

5.0 out of 5 stars Shockingly accurate!, March 19, 1999

I couldn't believe how accurate the descriptions are of all 60 animal signs! I am born in the year of the Yellow Dog, and the authors even pegged my medical problem, that being stomach ailments for the element earth (the color yellow). As a manager in corporate America, I have used this book as reference to determine the Taoist character traits of my employees. This easy to reference handbook has greatly assisted me in building a successful team. I highly recommend this book for those who lead others because it gives practical insights on how to manage different personalities within a group.

It is very basic. A good place for an absolute beginner but those with prior knowledge might find it a tad too generalized and be disappointed. If you like to spend an afternoon reading the newspaper or magazine horoscope then this is the book for you.

The Pros? It is an easy afternoon read. The writing is clear and lucid.

The Con? I question the accuracy... read for yourself and you will know what I mean.

Overall... an interesting lazy afternoon read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Animal Magic!, August 5, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Taoist Astrology: A Handbook of the Authentic Chinese Tradition (Paperback)
I loved this gem of a book! The stories about the animal signs brought the animals to life. Now I have a true sense of how much we are influenced by the animal that lives in our heart. I can even now figure out someone's animal sign just by observing their traits. (And the five elements section is very informative.)

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most authentic books on the subject I've ever read., February 11, 2009
This review is from: Taoist Astrology: A Handbook of the Authentic Chinese Tradition (Paperback)
This book provides a fresh perspective on a subject that is all too often simply regurgitated. Ironically, it does this by teaching the original Taoist philosophy on Chinese Astrology. I enjoyed how it gives a brief, but credible history and origin of "Chinese Astrology." Something that is oft overlooked in many other writings. It also recognizes more than just the well-known inter-triad sign compatibilities by making the reader aware of some other fantastic, but little known Yin-Yang parings. This book could easily replace the vast majority (99%) of other books on the same topic.

I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in Chinese Astrology.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!, February 28, 2007
This review is from: Taoist Astrology: A Handbook of the Authentic Chinese Tradition (Paperback)
Probably one of the best 12 animal/ 5 phases (or element) astrology book that you'll find.

I gave it to my parents and they got a kick out of it. Excellent for beginners and those who want to pursue more into Chinese Astrology.

5.0 out of 5 stars From a Taoist's perspective..., August 12, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Taoist Astrology: A Handbook of the Authentic Chinese Tradition (Paperback)
This is the most detailed and accurate source for Taoist astrology. I should know since I'm a practitioner of Taoism. I have been studying Taoism and Taoist astrology for over ten years. Online or offline this is the best resource for learning Taoist astrology. Everything you need to know is in this book. I have just two complaints concerning the dates: 1) There are numerous discrepencies in the starting & ending dates of the years listed in the back of the book. For example - The end date for lunar 2007 (Purple Boar) is listed as 2/6/2008 yet the start date for lunar 2008 (Yellow Rat) is listed as 2/2/2008. That's a five day overlap which is technically impossable. The actual starting date is 2/7/2008, I have the charts to prove it! Hopefully mistakes like these are just type-os. 2) On page 18 Susan Levitt lists solar 1996 as lunar 4694. If you use the traditional Chinese year counting method of counting the reigning years of the eperors, then she is wrong. The actual year is 4693. The reason for the one year discrepency is the reign of the first emperor, who according to LEGEND NOT FACT, took control 8 days prior to the start of the new year. So the modern communist government counts that extra 8 days as one year. I, like many people including historical scolars, believe this story to be nothing more than government propaganda to make everyone think the Chinese calendar is a little older than it really is. The Chinese communist government has been known for pulling stunts like this for decades to make themselves feel superior to the rest of the world. In short, the modern COMMUNIST calendar is wrong and the ancient, traditional Taoist calendar is correct. Which makes this year 2010 (White Tiger) the year 4707 not 4708. Everything else in the book is completely accurate. This is an otherwise excellent book that every student of Taoist/Chinese astrology should have, in fact it should be the only book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple to look up your chinese zodiac, February 8, 2008
This review is from: Taoist Astrology: A Handbook of the Authentic Chinese Tradition (Paperback)
this goes further than just "you are a dragon, or tiger etc." but is still really accesible. I have found it to be pretty accurate, which is challenging withour casting an entire horoscope/astrology chart.
