Biography

Where to begin? So I'm like all the rest, I saw an Iron Maiden poster when I was about 12 years old, and obviously thought it was cool as hell. When someone told me it was a poster for a band, well, that was me sold. My parents worried that I might be sidetracked from becoming a doctor / lawyer / whatever, and hey, they were right. So I soldiered through metal into punk rock, after a girl ... Read more in Amazon's Frank Turner Store

Editorial Reviews

Turner emerged from Britain's post-hardcore punk scene in 2001 as the lead singer of Xtra Mile Recordings act Million Dead. Since going solo in 2006, he has transformed from underground hero into a bona fide mainstream success story in the U.K., releasing four full-length albums, including 2011's England Keep My Bones, which led Spin to write that 'Frank Turner gives sincerity a good name' and to describe the album as 'an exclamation point in an increasingly brilliant career.' Paste has said, 'It's easy to love British singer-songwriter Frank Turner. As if he weren't already pulling at our heartstrings with his creative lyrics, rowdy songs and his well-known affinity for beer. But Turner's live performances take those qualities to a new level.'

If you've listened to FT before, you know how his music can move you. TDH does just that but then it punches you in the gut and leaves you wanting more. I love this album; I'd give away my father in law for another copy. Come to think of it, I'd give away my father in law for a grilled cheese sandwich. Anyway, great album!

Punk without the angst. Lyrics for the punk at heart with a modern folk sound. Perfect for me. Most of the songs on this album I am madly in love with to the point of obsessive listening. However, there are a few disappointing throw away songs. Epic enough to most certainly buy it and skip the last few on the album. I'll be attending his show later this fall purely because he reaches into your soul and makes you want to change the world. Brilliant stage performer.

Frank Turner isn't perfect and he's going to tell you about it on Tape Deck Heart. This honest set gives the listener a little more insight into the folk/punk rock and roll singer/songwriter and it's a great ride. Highlights include "Plain Sailing Weather" and the live staple from the last couple of tours called "Four Simple Words." While the lyrics on the record are more introspective, the music is still quintessential Frank Turner and the Sleeping Souls. In fact, the band is even tighter than they were on the excellent England Keep My Bones album from 2011. The album isn't perfect - after the high energy open and the heart wrenching middle, the last couple of tracks feel tacked on, almost like the band was out of energy (and who could blame them?). However, that aside, the addition of 5 bonus tracks on the deluxe edition, including the excellent "Tattoos", are worth the extra coin. A fantastic album through and through.

Up until a week ago,I'd never heard the name Frank Turner. Never mind any band he'd ever played in. Than again in regard to music I am anything but an aficionado of rock scene. If one were to look at pop music as a factory, rock n roll sometimes seems like an clogged conveyor belt-there are so many new bands and artists emerging they can barely get into the door. The only reason this even came to my mind is my Cousin, from Stoke On Trent, strongly recommended this artist to me when the two of us visited my local record haunt Bull Moose. I took a listen on the listening station there and decided that it was a worthwhile new rock album to pick up. Mind you I haven't purchased any new rock albums in quite some time. When one really gets deeper into the sound of this album, its more than a surprising little tapestry.

"Recovery" is an excellent opening number-a very richly produced rocker with lots of bells, rhythm and multiple vocal melodies and harmonies. "Losing Days" is a little more acoustically based guitar wise and rolls right along just as nicely. "The Way I Tend To Be" and the brooding, spare "Plain Sailing Weather" are both somewhat slower, more intricately constructed songs. "Good & Gone","Anymore" and "Tell Tale Signs" are very spare folk ballads musically, that is where "Polaroid Picture" blends folksy gentility with a mildly more upbeat rocking sound. "Four Simple Words" seems like an almost jazzy music hall type number at first before diving into a very heavy punk/guitar rocker. "The Fischer King Blues" is a very elaborately arranged rocker whereas "Oh Brother" typifies this "punk folk" sound Turner seems to be famous for-before ending the album with the beautifully atmospheric "Broken Piano".

Now that is just the music.

Sounds a bit different than his other albums (darker, maybe a bit sadder), but still amazing. I highly, highly recommend this album!

I have been a fan of Frank's since seeing him live when he opened for Flogging Molly a few years ago. If you are a fan of his music, this album will not disappoint you. It's track list is very strong from top to bottom.

I have Frank's entire discography, even obscure songs nobody really has. He is my all time favorite artist, and meeting him in person is no disappointment. He's just as sweet and friendly as you would expect him to be.
This record is full of fun shout/sing along songs, and quiet contemplative songs. It's a brilliant mix of pop/punk/folk that Frank makes all his own. A must have vinyl for any Frank Turner fan.
