Irina Golovin is very young when she meets Prince Alexei Muromsky and falls instantly in love. Irina and Alexei succumb to a night of passion together, even though it is clear that Alexei is being exiled to the Caucasus, his new post near the Persian border. He knows he is courting trouble when he promises a friend he will attend the secret meeting of those who would bring freedom to the oppressed people of Russia. Although Alexei agrees with his friend and their cohorts, he knows it is a hopeless cause at this time. Irina is unaware of the true nature of the meeting being held where her cousin has decided to take her as a chaperone so she can be with her fiancee, a man who will bring down anyone and everyone in the eyes of the government so he can rise in power himself. But amidst the intrigue and danger of the night, Irina and Alexei find a few hours of passion. Two years later Alexei returns to Moscow to find that the woman he has thought of for so long is now married to his friend, a man considerably older than she. When he learns of the true circumstances of the marriage, he is sorry for the pain he caused Irina, and determined to keep her out of his life for her own safety. But when Alexei is caught in the middle of a rebellion he tried desperately to stop, and is thrown into the Peter and Paul Fortress with no hope of escape, Irina, now a widow, takes matters into her own hands. An elaborate escape plan, and dangerous trek across the Russian countryside, and two evil manipulators prove an almost impossible challenge, but together Irina and Alexei overcome odds most could never even imagine.Ms. Beaumont's talent is a bright new light in the field of historical romance!
