In the long and distinguished career of French soundtrack and orchestra composer Maurice-Alexis Jarre, he of the star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the many movie soundtracks, this one hardly seems to rate a moment's notice. And against his work on "Doctor Zhivago" in 1965, "Taps" really is just a footnote in his career. What is so strange about this lack of praise or even basic credit for the soundtrack of "Taps" is that it is as good as any I've yet heard. It does what every movie soundtrack should, setting the mood, fitting each scene... it does it all so well. Maurice Jarre should have won an award for his superb work in composing this film's soundtrack, but sadly it seems destined to go unrecognised.

One reason why getting details on and generally learning about the soundtrack to "Taps" has been and continues to be needlessly difficult is that it was not released on CD until 2010, 29 years after the movie's release in 1981 and a year after Jarre's death in 2009. And on top of that, it was released as a "Limited Collector's Edition of 1200 copies". I've just got myself one, so there's 1,199 others out there. It must be one of the rarest things I own, this soundtrack. So yes. Learning about the soundtrack and especially listening to the whole thing is a real birch tree. But let me assure you- seek, and ye shall find a superb soundtrack.

The full list for the soundtrack is as follows:

1. "Taps" (2:05)
2. Main Title (1:37)
3. Indians On TV (0:34)
4. Honor (1:19)
5. "Black Jack March"/Semper Fidelis March" (3:16)
6. Memories (1:18)
7. We're Here (1:35)
8. "Love Is A Many Splendored Thing" (Fain/Webster) (2:23)
9. Defense Preparation (1:08)
10. One Minute To Comply (1:46)
11. "Scipio March" (1:29)
