Whether new to having a pet tarantula, or a little further along in the hobby, this is a great book to have on hand. All the basic questions/concerns about keeping a tarantula are well-covered in this book. There are also many beautiful color photos of tarantulas that will make you want to keep expanding your collection! There is far less information on keeping other spiders and scorpions, but it is still very helpful if you are starting out.

If you are interested in owning a tarantula or are new to the hobby I highly reccomend this book. It is well writen to the point and covers a lot of BASIC care information without getting to scientific or to historical. Great pictures and it has a pretty good section on different tarantulas in the hobby (talks about the temprement, housing, etc,) which will help you to choose what tarantula is right for you. This is a must for any tarantula hobbyist. Well worth your money.

This book has some serious shortcomings. It lists the tarantulas by their common, rather than scientific, names, which makes looking up specific species difficult, as many have multiple common names. The articles have interesting trivia about the tarantulas, but finding specific care information for them is difficult. The index is fairly useless; for example, neither "arboreal" nor "terrestrial" (nor their layman's alternatives) are listed, and there is no glossary of terms. It's easier to find the section you want using the table of contents. I would recommend this book as an add-on, rather than a primary resource, for anyone who might be even slightly serious about keeping tarantulas. Buy "The Tarantula Keeper's Guide" instead, or at least first.

I choice this item because my little son ( 5 yrs old) was attracted by arachnids in general and specifically by tarantulas. I do think that the writer is an expert in tarantulas breeding, storage and management. Reading this book I realized that buying and growing a tarantula is much less easy than expected. Therefore, I don't think I will buy one. Anyway, the review is complete and well explained in every issue treated by the author, expecially how to choose the most safe one . I recommend this book to all those beginners who want to share a part of their life with these particular animals!

Really nice photography, but some of the info is imprecise or worse, inaccurate. I recommend The Tarantula Keepers Guide by Stan Schulz instead. It's the most in-depth, useful tarantula keeping book I've ever found.

I purchased this book at a local pet shop. I own quite a few books on owning tarantulas, and believe this one by far is the most informative. Whether you're thinking about getting your first tarantula and want to know the basics or you're an experienced keeper like me and you just want to further expand your knowledge, this is a great book. This book is filled with beautiful full-color photos, and has a very useful "species accounts" chapter that tells you about individual species - temperament, housing requirements, etc. from the commonly available species to the more exotic, hard to find species. It's so important to do your research, you want to have happy, healthy pets, and also be able to enjoy them at their fullest.
