What is an assualt ship? It's part aircraft carrier (Harriers), part helicopter landing ship, part cargo ship, and can also carry 1,800 Marines and the craft to carry everything to a beach. These things are huge - they are the size of the WW2 Essex Class Aircraft Carriers. 843 feet long, 140' wide and has a landing craft well where hovercraft and other landing craft disembark. Just flood the well area, open up the cargo doors, and watch the craft that carry troops, trucks, cargo and or tanks sail away.

This is a very good book on these type ships, of which 12 were built. Line drawings, B&W photos show the interior of the ship, different weapons carried, defensive systems, radars, color plates (one page showing to scale, all of the planes, choppers, landing craft that can be carried).

These ships are the last word in amphibious warfare. This book is an excellent read on this unique naval vessel. Highly recommended for students of naval warfare, amphibious assualt, US Marine warfare.
