This review is from: The Target (DVD)
The Target starring Christopher Lambert is not a great film, nor is it a great cheesey action movie. It does however have elements of both of the film types. The film starts off with a undenieable intensity, that at times my lack focus, but still is forgivable because of how intense it is. The film is written by frequent Lambert scribe Brad Mirman, who wrote the excellent Ressurection, and the enjoyable Knight Moves. The film itself has moments of shear brillance, but loses itself midway thru the film. The intensity of the earlier half of the film goes awol for the majority of the latter half of the movie. Except it does manage to build up some of the lost energy for the finale, but by then the film has veered into the realm of absurdity. Upon first viewing of the movie I thought the film was missing at least one action scene. The movie has two and one lasts no more than 10 seconds. But upon repeated viewings I relaized what Mirman'a vision. Its just the fact that the editing of the finale demands that you use your head and think about what just happened, even then its still confusing. Then I realized that this is a very good movie caught in a strange movie limbo, between a true dramatic film and a typical shootem up. Solid acting and solid directing make the Target a flawed but good film. Denise Hopper fans should love it while if your a Lambert fan don't expect Ressurection and give it a couple of viewings before you pass judment.

1.0 out of 5 stars very good script squandered, September 9, 2004

Michael Bolts (superior, wiusa) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Target (DVD)
Dennis Hopper (Knockaround Guys, River's Edge) is targeted for death by some big black guy named Cristo who is in jail. Hopper hires the help of Christopher Lambert (The Sicilian, Mean Guns) for his protection. Hopper's daughter, played by Diane Kruger
(National Treasure, Wicker Park), is brought in to the mix as well and her boyfriend is killed. Hopper's friends kidnap his daughter and Lambert goes in and kills the a-holes and in return Lambert is shot, so the 3 go to Hopper's mother, which is far off in a tiny village. Lambert lives..ya-da..ya-da and it really has some good ideas and quality but is squandered by that guy who plays Cristo and many other things. Also the back stories of Lambert and Hopper are very good but like I said it's hard when crap gets in the way. This is one of the Lambert movies I thought I really cared about his character and Hopper is good but like I said before, CRAP, got in the way. The girl who played Hopper's daughter was hot...she was smoking.
