Editorial Reviews

Based on true events, Target Practice centers on 5 blue-collar friends on a weekend fishing trip and the hell that's unleashed upon them when they almost run into a car that's been abandoned in the middle of an isolated mountain road. They inadvertently stumble into the middle of an undercover operation involving a CIA agent and a hidden training camp for homegrown terrorists. These 5 everyday guys find themselves way out of their league, fighting a bloody battle against a cunning, well-trained brutal enemy that knows the rugged terrain like the back of its hand.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very, very good ... but not recommended for everyone November 3, 2010
Format:DVD
I saw this movie at the Dances With Films Independent Film Festival in Hollywood and I've been waiting for it to come out on DVD because it was shockingly, unexpectedly intense. It's an action movie but it also hits deeper, touching on an array of complicated social issues such as terrorism, racial tension and domestic abuse. It has some great characters and it's also incredibly suspenseful and at times outright SCARY. People in the audience in Hollywood were literally covering their eyes when they saw it.

Basically it's an update of outdoor man vs man thrillers like John Boorman's "Deliverance" and Walter Hill's "Southern Comfort," and more recently Ti West's "Trigger Man," although it actually features a lot more all-out action and bloodshed than any of them. Instead of psychotic hillbillies or territorial Cajuns, this time the main characters are up against a group of homegrown terrorists when they accidentally discover a hidden terrorist training camp in the mountains while on a weekend fishing trip.

The movie starts with 5 friends leaving their houses and piling into an SUV for their trip into the wilderness - one of whom has a SERIOUS issue with his wife (opening line in the movie is a doozy). Things get started right away when they almost hit a jeep that's been abandoned in the middle of a deserted mountain road. They stop to see if anyone needs their help and that turns out to be a disastrous decision for everyone involved . Someone doesn't want them to report the abandoned vehicle and suddenly they're being shot at from every direction by automatic weapons.

They don't all make it out of that initial attack (which is quite shocking in its sudden level of violence), and the survivors are left struggling to survive in the wilderness, fighting to figure out who's hunting them, and why, and there's a couple of really REALLY unexpected twists.

There are a LOT of scenes where you're holding your breath, waiting for the bullets to start flying again ... and there are a LOT of bullets in this one. The action scenes are taut, fast, well-choreographed and bloody ... Only recommended for those who can handle this sort of thing. I loved it but know what you're getting into here!

5.0 out of 5 stars A marvel of explosive action and cunning restraint November 15, 2010
By PDM
Format:DVD
TARGET PRACTICE is an incredible example of the importance of subtlety in creating a really exciting and satisfying action thriller. Director Rich Riedel brings a brilliant, assured, and confident hand to the crafting of this high intensity nightmare-in-nature, and every moment of the story brings a building sense of alarm that is at once hypnotically compelling and deeply scary. This film has it all - a terrific story, outstanding acting, hard-hitting action and for once a pay-off that is more than equal to the build-up. But for me one of the most amazing and unique qualities about TARGET PRACTICE is the way that Riedel combines the peaceful beauty of the mountains with the burbling terror of the victims and the ever mounting menace of their predicament. He also is one of those rare directors who understands the incredible power of silence and the quiet moment in building tension. Why don't more filmmakers see that?

Don't miss this film!
