Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

CIA agent Jordan Sandor decides to take drastic action in Stephens’ third book in an ongoing series. After suffering the loss of a close friend at the hands of criminal mastermind Adina, Sandor disobeys orders and goes to the Venezuelan jungle to track Adina and kill him. Lies, a massive drug operation, and various traps thwart Sandor at every turn. Adina escapes, and now Sandor must contend with his furious superiors and a madman who knows he’s being hunted. Adina has a bold plan to take out his enemy and doesn’t care about collateral damage. The novel reads like the early work of Robert Ludlum, especially during the intense action sequences. The personal relationships, though, are a bit hard to swallow. It’s hard to believe that a woman Sandor meets in a bar would fall into his arms, and they will be madly in love in less than an hour. Still, those who enjoy plots revolving around covert CIA action will stick with this one to the end. --Jeff Ayers

Review

"Targets of Revenge is like a big summer action movie. There are last-second escapes, plot twists, and double crosses that keep the plot moving quickly...[Sandor] is the CIA version of DIrty Harry...Stephens does his homework, taking the time to get nice local details for the wide-ranging locations and to develop interesting secondary characters. Anyone who has enjoyed the first two will want to read Sandor’s latest adventure." (Scott Pearson, author of Star Trek: Honor in the Night Suspense Magazine)

"Jeffrey Stephens' deftly rendered new novel plunges the reader into a deadly maelstrom of secrets, lies and shadows. . . .Targets of Revenge leaves your heart pounding, again reminding us in terrifying detail that there are many who will go to any length to attack the United States." (BWWBooksWorld.com)

“Smoothly written…Stephens gives us a hero [Jordan Sandor] who is easy to root for, a fellow who doesn’t fret about morality or worry about much of anything beyond killing the bad guys.” (Publishers Weekly)

“The novel reads like the early work of Robert Ludlum, especially during the intense action sequences…those who enjoy plots revolving around covert CIA action will stick with this one to the end.” (Booklist)

“An attorney, Stephens lays out his story in orderly fashion, with one action scene neatly following another. The pace of [Targets of Revenge] is Bourne-like…The tale maintains our interest…[Targets of Revenge is] skillfully rendered…” (Kirkus Reviews)

CIA field operative Jordan Sandor ignores the warning of his superiors to forget Venezuelan terrorist Adina, who escaped his previous attempt to end this psychopath’s reign of indiscriminate mass murdering (see Targets of Opportunity). He deploys a hand-picked team to destroy Adina’s cell and kill this maniac.

Sandor glides into the Venezuelan jungle with plans to assassinate Adina. However, though he thirst for vengeance as one of Adina’s victim was a close friend, Sandor changes his mission once he obtains facts on the ground after breaching the terrorist’s camp. Adina is not just processing cocaine for the world markets, he is manufacturing anthrax. Killing the abomination may not thwart his unknown evil scheme. Contacting his agency’s bureaucratic leaders, Sandor convinces them to set up a counter-operation to prevent Adina from deploying his latest evil. As he globetrots, Sandor finds his adversary has allies inside the American and several foreign governments to probably include the CIA and INTERPOL.

The latest fast-paced Sandor entry (see Targets of Deception) is an exciting action-packed tale as the hero risks his life to save the innocent from an amoral maniac’s plan to cause a pandemic disaster. With a contemporary Rambo-like star moving forward the storyline at an incredible clip, fans of action-packed thrillers that never takes a respite will appreciate the rematch.

`Targets of Revenge' is the first novel I've read featuring CIA Agent Jordan Sandor. Starting at the third book in the series is definitely not the best choice if you are looking to read this series. I felt quite a bit lost throughout the whole book. We first meet Sandor hatching a plan to go after and neutralize Adina, a criminal responsible for the deaths of many people. While he's breached Adina's compound in Venezuela, he finds not only a lab for the processing and distribution of cocaine, but additionally a bio-weapon which could cripple the US. Sandor follows the money from Venezuela to Egypt, Russia, Mexico, and back to the US. There are even more enemies, both foreign and domestic, than Sandor had realized and he is running against the clock to put an end to this elaborate scheme and finally exact his revenge. Sandor is a loose cannon, barely following the orders of his bosses, and operating in places where his agency is not allowed. Incongruent with the "typical" CIA agent, Sandor seems to be heavily ruled by his emotions and wants to act without thinking through his options fully. `Targets of Revenge' features a lot of action and intrigue, but very little character building/growth. If you're interested in this series, definitely start with book one.

"Targets of Revenge" is a thriller novel. It was the third book in a series. I didn't need to read the previous books to follow this one, though I suspect I would have gotten more out of this book if I had. Also, much of the action in the previous books was spoiled in this one, so you may wish to read them in order.

The author did a good job of writing exciting, action-packed fights where it was easy to follow what was going on. Sandor was more a military rambo than sneaky spy. He got his information by holding a gun to people's heads. He was reckless, impulsive, and didn't follow orders (even those he gave) well. He always had to be in control of operations even if he technically shouldn't be giving orders or even involved. Even when Sandor acted as a spy, he didn't try hard to be believable so his enemies weren't fooled by his cover story. He always ended up having to fight his way out of danger.

I found that I didn't really care about the characters (except Romero, a minor character) because I knew nothing about them. Sandor's best friends existed merely to play backup to his plans. We're told nothing about Sandor's past or present beyond the current actions that he takes. We don't get inside his head to feel fear or anger--we can only tell his emotions by his words or actions (which never act afraid, so why should I be worried for him?). He seems to exist purely to run recklessly through the pages leaving dead behind him. He never paused to reflect, "Hey, there might be a better way to do things where fewer people end up dead."

There were no graphic sex scenes, but there was a little more description than kiss-and-fade-to-back in one case. There was a fair amount of explicit bad language, including in several languages beyond English.

The aptly named "Targets of Revenge" is a rousing and well crafted story, with several interesting characters and flowing dialog. The targets of the protagonist Jordan Sandor (CIA agent extrodinaire) are a Venezuelian madman and a Russian tycoon, who are in cahoots along with several others, to bring pain and suffering to America.

The story is fast paced, as Sandor discovers a threat of biological terrorism, while on an unauthorized trip for revenge in the Venezuelian jungle...and scrambles to various countries, winding up in America, in his quest to prevent a terrible (and well planned) attack on NYC.

Highly recommended reading if you enjoy the genre...and I found the epilog touching.
