4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty solid except for the handle...
...satisfied enough to rate this case a 4 out of 5 stars. My only complaint is that the telescoping handle will get stuck periodically and I have to jiggle it from side-to-side to make it collapse fully. Otherwise, the main compartment is generous and can hold enough for an overnight trip. And the computer compartment is well padded (if anything its a little too large...

3.0 out of 5 stars Fast wearing wheels
I used this for six months carrying a laptop and some small hand tools. The wheels wore down to where the case actually drags on the ground after six months. I understand that it was not designed for heavy use but the plastic wheels are just crap. I'll use it again once I figure out how to install my inline skate wheels on it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fits my 18.4" HP dv8t just fine, July 15, 2010

Previous reviews about this case would fit my big laptop were not assuring to me. The reviews said this model fit their 17 inch laptops. It depends on how the laptop is measured as to what this really means. My laptop has an 18.4 inch diagonal screen (the case is actually 20 inches diagonal). This is how screen sizes for TVs and computers are advertised by manufacturers. However, the left-to-right width of my laptop is 17 3/8 inches. So, I was concerned about buying this case. I had trouble finding anyone on the net commenting about my size of laptop fitting this case. I finally found and went to Toshiba's website and looked at the laptop accessories section. Toshiba listed this case to fit its 18.4 inch laptop. That convinced me that this case would work, so I ordered it.

My laptop fits nicely in this case with no shoving or straining to insert or remove it. There's padding on the bottom and both sides for the laptop. It's not hefty padding, but the case itself provides the first line of defense. I like the top-loading entry. It's easier and faster for me to load/unload the laptop this way rather than to zip the case all the way around, split the case open, insert laptop, close the case, and zip around again. I got used to top-loading on another Targus case that was given to me.

The tipping problem when resting on its wheels, which is mentioned by others, is a bit exaggerated in my opinion. Sure it can tip over, as does the shoulder case I use for another laptop, if it is loaded unbalanced. Take care not to load it with most of the weight on the front side or bump it if you don't have hold of the extension handle. It is designed to lean back on the wheel-side a few degrees to reduce tipping. Some care in loading and handling should help prevent tipping.

Construction is well made. It is large and it may be difficult to carry on in the cabins of puddle jumper airplanes. If so, you might remove the laptop to carry it on board and gate check the case and contents. In larger aircraft, you can fit it in the overhead compartment. The large compartment is useful to carry a change of clothing if you get separated from your luggage or have to stay a night you didn't plan on. You can get away with a shoulder case for a smaller laptop if you travel a lot. I recommend a roller for a big one. An adjustable velcro divider will secure a smaller laptop in the laptop pocket if needed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Carries everything, December 12, 2007

I was looking for a laptop carrying case that also had room for my PDA, CDs and more. Every other case I looked at was either too small or too expensive. The Targus case holds everything I need to take with me and still has room for more. Having the retractable handle and wheels makes taking everything so easy. All of this at a price that was very easy on my wallet. I have been recommending it to everyone.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Bag - may not "carry on," regardless of liner inches..., February 12, 2009

This review is from: Targus Blacktop Rolling Case Designed to Protect 17 Inch Laptops CPT700US (Black) (Personal Computers)
This bag seems well built and I like is with one caveat, in one spot I read this bag could carry on planes. The total linear inches also met popular airline standards. One of the selling points, for me, was a computer case (for 17" screen) AND an overnight bag that I could carry on a plane.

When I unpacked this item I knew it would be close. Because it met size requirements and arrived only a few days before my trip, I decided to give it a try. I was not completely surprised, but disappointed, when I could not carry this bag on, and the airline checked it (at the gate -- just carried my work laptop on with me).

I'd highly recommend this bag for a one or two night trip (a few items of clothing and laptop, etc). It seems well made and rolls very nicely. The handle doesn't seem wimpy. (Though the handle does not have a strap to fasten it down when retracted, the handle does click in place. There are a lot of pockets-es, as Bilbo might say. (I wondered if it might be better to make the front two smaller pockets into one more useful pocket.) I would definitely say it is "worth it"; just be aware, this item may not carry on small to mid-size jets. Perhaps it will work on large jets. I will probably need another, slightly less bukly bag eventually.

This is a very nice rolling bag, and so far I see nothing of the troubles others may have reported. It's roomy, and forces more organizational skills than I possess, but that could be a good thing. The only thing that could be a negative is that it's pretty dark inside, which means I could lose things forever. But think of the fun it will be to find them again.

It's a good bag, and for the price, it's an excellent bag!

I purchased this just to use twice a week on one night lay overs and it has worked great for me. The only thin I have noticed so far is the handle tends to stick and doesn't want to extend sometimes. It almost has to many pockets. If you were to try to fill them all with something it would probably crush your laptop.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Notebook Case, July 19, 2008

Plenty of room to store 17 inch laptop and accessories. Took on a flight and fits in carry on storage area. Only drawback is extending handle sometimes sticks.
