Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This mediocre military SF adventure sequel to 2008's Tarizon: The Liberator continues the exploits of Leek Lanzia, an Earth-born teenager exiled to the planet Tarizon. Hailed as Tarizon's savior as per an old prophecy, Lanzia leads the mutant Loyalists and their allies in a vicious war against the hovertanks of the Tarizon Global Army. Lanzia's episodic adventures include uniting Tarizon's disparate races, bolstering the Loyalist army's air forces and attempting to free his completely nondescript mate, Lucinda, from captivity. An epic scale and some nifty ideas can't hide the shallow characterization and rushed plotting, and Manchee completely squanders the inherent humor of a 17-year-old boy leading an army of mutants. The sparse descriptions and assumed familiarity with the first volume leave much of the story inaccessible to new readers. (Sept.)

Review

Accepting exile from Earth for learning too much about the alien presence on his home world, Peter Turner finds himself in the position of the long-awaited Liberator on the planet Tarizon. Now known as Leek Lanzia, Peter commands an army of rebels including seafolken, mutants, and nanomites against the numerically and technologically superior Tarizon Global Army. The second volume in Manchee's trilogy details one man's struggle against tyranny on an alien planet and ends with a premonition of more problems for Earth. VERDICT Suitable for YA and adult fans of interplanetary space opera and sf military fiction. --Library Journal

In William Manchee's second installment in the Tarizon trilogy, Leek Lanzia, the Earth teenager many Tarizonians believe is the Liberator, finds himself leading the ragtag remnants of the Loyalist army. Still reeling from his mate s kidnapping by the TGA, the army of the corrupt world government, Leek manages to enlist the aid of all of the downtrodden peoples on Tarizon. His army consists not only of Tarizon and humans, it includes mutants, seafolken, and the minute nanomites. As these forces bring their skills and unique gifts to the battle, Leek and the Loyalists begin to realize that he is indeed the fulfillment of prophecy. Once again, William Manchee has crafted a grand science-fiction adventure in the tradition of Robert Heinlein and many of the early sci-fi masters. There is romance, plenty of air battles, and lots of intrigue. And, most interesting to me, Manchee crafts many new alien species with unique abilities. Tarizon: Civil War is an exciting page turner and one that will surely please any science-fiction buff. I can t wait for the next installment. --Janie Franz, MyShelf.com

4.0 out of 5 stars fun young adult military science fiction, September 4, 2009
Seventeen year old Leek Lanzia has found life on Tarizon dangerous yet rewarding after being exiled from his birth planet earth. He is the orb's savior if one can believe an ancient prophecy. In that role, Lanzia leads the mutant Loyalists and their allies against the superior forces of the Tarizon Global Army especially their hovertanks.

However, various races who have been divided in the past and encouraged to remain split by the ruling elite have rallied around the savior. Soon the Loyalist side has air power that almost matches their foe. Meanwhile still a teen at heart and in other parts of his anatomy Leek tries to rescue his mate, Lucinda.

The sequel to THE LIBERATOR continues the unlikely but entertaining and satirical adventures of the exiled Leek on Tarizon. He now leads a growing force of mutants and other species n a civil war, but still has issues with raging hormones (though I would like to see more of his raging hormones interfering with his duties and responsibilities) that call for a time out so he can rescue his girlfriend. Once again the underlying message of this fun young adult military science fiction remains at a minimum tolerance for all while the preferable choice would be consensus.
