5.0 out of 5 stars If you want a fast-paced credible mystery this is it!
Lynne Heitman has done it again. She has written a story I couldn't put down. Lynne Heitman has a real gift for creating fast paced thrillers that pull you into the lives of her characters. After reading Hard Landing and Tarmac I feel I know Alex Shanahan and care about what happens to her next. The only thing bad about Tarmac was finishing it. I can't wait for her...

2.0 out of 5 stars hackneyed plot
Although well-written, I thought the plotting too contrived and the characters not altogether credible - too monochromatic. The style and setting throughout are determinedly realistic, but, like the plot, the protagonists seem manipulated into doing what the author decides is best for them. Unfortunately, much in the story came over as padding. For instance, why the...

5.0 out of 5 stars Tarmac, April 19, 2002

Second in a great mystery series, Tarmac takes you into the realm of stolen aircraft parts, drugs and murder. The lead charater in the series is Alex Shanahan, a airline executive with a nose for business and detective work. In Tarmac, she investigates a friend's murder in Miami. With the assistance of a former FBI agent and a quirky computer hack, the heroine courageously takes on the FBI, drug lords, and the airline 'old boy' system.

The author, a former airline executive, gives you some 'inside' information about the airlines, such as the large blackmarket on airline parts. In Tarmac, you get to know more about Alex and what makes her tick. The other characters in the book are interesting and at the end you hope to see them in future books.

I really loved the book and look forward to reading Lynne Heitman's next installment of Alex Shanahan's adventures.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tarmac, August 29, 2002

If you have read Lynne Heitman's Hard Landing, you'll love Tarmac! If you haven't read it, I recommend it -- it forms a great backdrop for Tarmac, though Tarmac stands nicely on its own as a thriller from cover to cover. I am already standing in line for Lynne's next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read it! You'll love it!, May 29, 2002

What a great book! I love this genre and love this book. It has everything I look for. It is an absorbing and fast read but not too short or too long. Heitman is a wonderful writer and has an amazing descriptive talent that makes the characters and settings come alive. I found the story line engrossing with enough turns to keep me interested and not certain where it was going but avoiding the unbelievable, totally out of left field endings that some other authors rely on. And I like the main characters. The good guys are flawed enough to be real but utterly sympathetic and likeable. I highly recommend TARMAC.

I thought Miss Heitman's "Hard Landing" was superb but she has surpassed herself with her new book "Tarmac"!! I promise you the ride of your life and it's the kind of book you won't want to put down for a second. The story moves at a fast and exciting pace with lots of twists and turns. The characters are finely drawn and I especially liked the computer guru. I highly recommend "Tarmac" and am looking forward to Miss Heitman's next book with Alex.

HOW EXCITING TO HAVE ANOTHER BOOK BY LYNN HEITMAN. TARMAC WAS FILLED WITH SUSPENSE, INTERESTING CHARACTERS, AND A FAST-MOVING PLOT. LYNN HAS SUPERIOR KNOWLEGE OF THE "BEHIND THE SCENES" NET WORK AND SHOWS THIS IN HER CHARACTERS AND PLOTS.

I HOPE SHE HAS ALMOST FINISHED HER NEXT BOOK IN THE SERIES AS I CAN HARDLY WAIT TO READ IT.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent thriller - not quite as good as Hard Landing, April 6, 2002
This review is from: Tarmac (Paperback)
Having been enthralled by Heitman's first novel (Hard Landing) only last week, I rushed out and got Tarmac.

When John McTavish - a key ally of airline manager Alex Shanahan in Hard Landing - is murdered in Miami and the local cops say he was there on a drug buy, Alex decides to head to Miami herself. She knows that the drug story is preposterous, plus she has mysterious evidence that the cops don't - before his murder, John sent her the fire-damaged logbook from a downed `plane in Ecuador and a huge $25,000 diamond ring. After foolishly exposing herself to great danger, she teams up with Jack Dolan, a retired but flawed FBI agent and jointly they realize that John's murder could be tied to the illegal and highly dangerous business of recycling used, damaged, and even crashed airline parts and passing them off as new. Their investigation leads them into a confusing and threatening world involving a fearsome drug dealer, a nasty and brutal Vietnam vet, other dubious characters, and a brilliant, tricky young computer-whiz.

As with Hard Landing, Heitman has done an excellent job in crafting a thriller full of intrigue, corruption, and conspiracy that culminates in a surprising ending. The ending though, is not quite as satisfying as that of Hard Landing - Tarmac's seems a little contrived whereas that of Hard Landing - while surprising - was rock solid. I wonder whether this difference is related to the fact that, in Hard Landing, Heitman was writing about airport operations - in which she has direct experience - whereas, in Tarmac, she's reaching into the world of money laundering, drug trafficking, law enforcement, and airline parts.

Lynne Heitman really knows how to knock off some socks. Tarmac is a great mystery that includes a heroine so real that I wondered, after the book was over, what Alex is doing right now.

About a third of the way into the book Alex Shanahan follows a suspect down a dark Florida road and an action sequence kicks in that grabs you by the throat and won't let go. The set-up to the mystery is elegant but the action -- and the characters -- really hooked me. The intensity only tightens until it's like a gun pointed at your head. I couldn't stop reading after the half-way point, and that's my favorite kind of story. Best of all, I didn't want the book to end when it was over.

I'll be waiting impatiently for the next in the series to arrive. Don't miss this one, it's a keeper.

4.0 out of 5 stars A story that keeps you involved!, July 2, 2009
This review is from: Tarmac (Mass Market Paperback)
This was a good read! Lots of airline related info, maybe too much at times? Very suspenseful in that you only find out who the good guys are at the very end. Very realistic ending in that the main character doesn't live happily ever after with the 'hero' collaborator. One or two slow parts but 97% was good reading!
